Zoochat Challenge North America 2022

The kangaroos pictured in the Facebook post are Western Grey Kangaroos rather than Eastern Greys.

Thanks, I wasn't sure if there was a way to visually distinguish the two. I trust your ID is probably correct; in the interest of fairness @Neil chace let me know if you have evidence or reason to believe they're actually Eastern and I'll review it, otherwise we can go with the Western ID.

I'll switch it to Western Grey Kangaroo. Won't really make a distance since I don't think I'll go to any other zoos with Grey kangaroos this year- my ID must've been wrong, I'm not a Kangaroo expert by any means. Thanks for the correction!

Could have sworn you were bull sharking me on this one, but it does seem right! I'll have to add Oklahoma Aquarium to my must-see list.

Oklahoma Aquarium does indeed have Bull Sharks! I saw them with @Ituri back in 2019 as well. They're pretty cool but the lack of being able to keep really anything else in with them that you don't want eaten makes it pretty obvious why nobody else seems to want any.

They do keep some extremely large Nurse Sharks in there with them now, not sure if they did then.

I read somewhere on zc that they were the only place that had them, but it’s possible that was wrong. That’s my bad for not checking the gallery a bit more
No worries. Part of that challenge is doing the research to double check your claim before making it, so in the future just do some searching through the gallery and forums (a Google search or two is also a good idea). Should only take a few minutes :)

Before my new update, a couple housekeeping things:

1. Because of how long many of these posts are, I think it would be a good idea if people started utilizing the spoiler function. This is a great feature we have on our forum for condensing large amounts of information in a way that makes them accessible to whoever wants to view them without greatly extending the page length for those who don't. You can find it on the post ribbon to the left of the camera, as one of the "Insert" options; just copy the text you want in spoiler and then select "Insert Spoiler".

From now on I will be using spoiler text for most of my updates; I hope everyone else does the same, especially for those of you who re-post your entire list every time.

2. Remember to only count up to the minimum needed for each challenge. If you saw 8 sharks and only needed 4, label it 4/4 and give me a list of 4 species. If you want to add a note about the other 4 species you saw, that's fine - but don't give me an 8/4 and a straight list of 8 species because it may create confusion about what's needed for the challenge.

And a couple quick taxonomy notes:
  • Blue Poison Dart Frog (sometimes incorrectly signed as Dendrobates azureus) and Dyeing Poison Dart Frog (Dendrobates tinctorius) are the same species, with Blue being a color morph - so don't count them separately.
  • Orangutans are one of the animals where I'll count it at genus level if needed; a lot of zoos have hybrids or a mix of hybrid and subspecific, so if you see any orangutan just count it and don't worry about the ID.

I only just now saw this housekeeping post. I now see that my count of Dendrobates is inaccurate and therefore I have not yet completed the Pick Your Poison Challenge. Within this spoiler are my updated Newport Aquarium frog sightings and challenge progress.

Newport Aquarium 2/2/2022

Pick Your Poison 5/6 Dendrobatidae & 1/3 Mantellidae

I was just thinking about that while I was at San Antonio, actually. Texas is also just chock full of major collections, almost all within easy driving distance of DFW. I would not be doing as well in the competition if I still lived in Louisiana. The weather certainly hasn't hurt though :p Now I just need St. Louis to not close their bird exhibits in the next week and a half, so I can secure my magpie! I have solid plans for everything else...
