Welsh Mountain Zoo Welsh Mountain Zoo News 2022

Such a shame the female Snow Leopard died I was lucky enough to see them both out together not long ago must have been just before she died
Apparently there’s a new Red Panda

Unfortunately the male Snow Leopard had to be put to sleep recently, such a shame the female passed away not long ago
They were a good age though and had Cubs in the past as part of the international breeding program
The zoo are trying to get a breeding pair

They are? That makes us happy!

Terrible news, hoping for the best with the zoo acquiring a breeding pair.

Notice from the enclosure
At least they both lived to a good age I think the male was 17 but not 100 percent sure but was about that age
I last saw the male a couple of weeks ago he looked fine but cats are good at hiding health issues and the keepers would know their animals much better than I do
The staff at the Welsh Mountain zoo are so friendly, they were really upset loosing their snow leopards

They’ve sourced a male snow leopard from somewhere in England. I won’t say where from but I think it’s just the formalities of moving him now.

They were born three days apart and would have turned 17 this year:

0.1 Otilia born 29/04/2005 at Tallinn Zoo, Estonia
1.0 Szechuan born 02/05/2005 at Szeged Zoo, Hungary

Welsh Mountain zoo now has a new male Snow Leopard, don’t know yet if it’s onshow yet
Great news and apparently a female on the way as well

Copied from newsletter =

In the last newsletter we reported the sad death towards the end of last year of our old female snow leopard ‘Otilia’. We did caution that her partner, ‘Szecsuan’, was also old at sixteen years and sadly we must report his death this spring. Both these animals were real favourites with staff and visitors alike and will be greatly missed.

Locating a new young pair of snow leopards under the advice of the species co-ordinator was not a problem, but organising their transfer to Colwyn Bay has proved very difficult. COVID and Brexit didn’t help and then a raft of health checks slowed things down. But we are now very pleased to announce that the young male, ‘Sumbe’, born in 2020 in Thrigby Wildlife Gardens in Norfolk, arrived here on 13th March and is settling well.
(Photograph of Sumbe at the top of this newsletter taken by Karen Clark.)
The new female will be travelling from France and whilst arrangements and paperwork are moving very slowly, we hope to announce her arrival by the summer.

I've noticed recently there are Aesculapian snakes living wild in the grounds of the zoo and surrounding area and are doing well as a population of around 70. Unlike the population just outside London Zoo by the Regents canal, now presumably extinct?
