Symbio Wildlife Park Symbio Developments & New Species

Female Red Panda Kesari escaped her enclosure at Symbio due to a fallen tree as a consequence of heavy rain. She was unfortunately hit by a car on the highway but was found by keepers and rushed to the vets. Hopefully she is able to recover quickly: Red panda hit by car after escaping zoo by using fallen tree

Hopefully Kesari makes a full recovery and this story has a better outcome of that of Badal, who died after being hit by a car when he escaped his exhibit at Hamilton Zoo in 2006. In that case, it was believed he was mistaken for a possum by the driver.

In both instances, a red panda is just about the last thing any driver would expect to see on a New Zealand or Australian road!

"Kesari had attempted to cross a major highway and was struck by an unsuspecting vehicle who was overtaking cars that slowed down to allow Kesari to cross," Symbio zookeepers said.

That is a horrible bit of highway at the best of times... I've had cars speed up to not let me onto it from the onramp, even when they've had plenty of space to move over to the right lane and let cars in... grr!! What really grates is that somebody saw that all the cars in front had slowed for some reason, but thought that their trip was more important than slowing down for whatever was trying to cross...

Poor Kesari... this is a keeper's worst nightmare. I hope her carers have plenty of hugs and support at this time, and that Kesari has a good outcome after her tragic accident.

Tragic really. Cars had been stopping to let her cross, if this vehicle hadn't been speeding and overtaking maybe she wouldn't have gotten hit...my thoughts are with her keepers, hopefully she gets better soon!

Sadly, poor Kesari may have been mistaken for a fox - right colouring and bushy tail - but still, who intentionally decides to overtake when other cars are obviously slowing down for something ahead? What if the thing on the road had been a small child... or a much larger animal? Who would want to live with hitting a living thing just because you couldn't be arsed to slow down when others did?

Beggars belief really...

Sadly Kesari has died:

How infuriating this person’s lack of commonsense and judgement has cost an endangered species it’s life. My thoughts are wth her keepers during this difficult time.

Escaped red panda dies after being hit by car

Today staff confirmed Kesari had been "laid to rest" as her injuries were "too significant to recover from".

"Multiple fractures in the pelvis, and a significant amount of arthritis already present in the area, due to her age, deemed the chances of a positive and quality recovery too slim to put Kesari through the pain," the zoo said.

"The team at Symbio, and Kesari's zookeepers, are understandably distraught and devastated.

Kesari is survived by her five cubs, Mohan, Phinju. Raja, Shifu, Makalu."

Tragic news, and my thoughts are with her keepers. May she rest peacefully.

I too, am quite annoyed that this person has seemingly killed this endangered animal. They have absolutely no excuses whatsoever. Why would you speed up when everyone else is slowing down...honestly.

It’s effectively dangerous driving and given the consequences should be regarded as such. As @tdierikx has stated, anyone with half a brain would recognise the other cars were slowing down in response to a hazard - be it an obstruction, a child or an endangered species escaped from the local zoo!

It’s interesting to note that at eight years of age, Kesari was already suffering from age related conditions such as arthritis. Kesari was middle aged for a species that has an average 10-12 year lifespan and can sometimes reach late teens. Her parents, Sagar and Bo, died aged 15 and 10 respectively.

Interestingly, Symbio have a history of red pandas living to around 17... at least 2 that I know of got to that ripe old age. Symbio is an amazing little zoo, with amazing keepers who always do the very best for all of their charges. My heart goes out to every keeper who ever had anything to do with Kesari... they must be absolutely shattered by this development.

Yes, Chori at Symbio lived until the age of 17, while her sons at Wildlife HQ (Nima and Dawa) were a few months away from turning 18 when they passed away. Another son (Pasang) is turning 17 this year. Good genes!!!

Chito at Hamilton Zoo was almost 18 when died in late 2020. It’ll be interesting to see if his many offspring reach this age.
