ZSL Whipsnade Zoo ZSL Whipsnade Zoo News 2022

Was up at Whipsnade today and heard about the sending locations of the new ostriches - 3 Woburn, 1 Longleat.

The ostriches were running about the paddock in between the sun and showers - providing good viewing for the very interested lions.

Nilo watch update - managed to spot him in the bamboo at the far end :)

So it seems Whipsnade will be retaining only a single male ostrich?

Also, I wonder if Whipsnade will obtain a female in the future to be paired with Nilo, considering Nilo’s from a rather well represented line.

According to the keeper I spoke to the Woburn ostriches are staying and the longleat one is temporary but that’s only one comment on them.

I know someone mentioned on this thread about a potential partner for Nilo before but she’s quite young so not due to join yet .

I'm sure there was a press / newsletter release ( but I can't find it now) they have sourced a female, but she is far too young to breed at the moment, they are aiming for her to arrive in 2023.

There were only 4 ostriches out today and given one was said to be a temporary stay I wonder if it has been moved on. The 4 on view were very lively and keeping the lions amused.

From over the fence :)

The new holidaying lions are behind the ostrich enclosure and their normal enclosure back home is in a bit of a hollow so now they get to sit on their rocks and watch the ostriches run past. A nice view. And they gather at the fence.

The ostriches belt up and down. The lions look at what appears to be an unfairly restricted lunch. And on they go.

I work at Whipsnade and there were definitely 5 Ostriches in the paddock yesterday.

One does tend to be right over the back of the paddock away from his pals (I think he likes to wind up the lions)

That’s great to know thanks :) you’re right on the lion tempting!

Email to members / marketing sign ups today notes the move of the rideable carousel from London (vacating the space for the new reptile house) to whipsnade where it will be cleaned up and placed in an area TBC. Hopefully not too near the exhibits (the blaring Jurassic park style music from the now defunct Dino area being a good example of where not to plonk something down).

Hang on a minute what is meaning of this about the carousel moving from London to Whipsnade

Making space for the new reptile area in london.
It is zoo news.
It impacts the zoo and people posted in other threads about dinosaur areas and planning permission for displays and peppa pig. It’s also being moved because of the new reptile house which is animal related. Given the previous Dino thing did impact the animals in terms of where it was placed and the music it may also have a wider impact.

If however we are not allowed to post anything about a zoo except where it directly impacts the animals I’m of course happy with that if it applies universally.
