Blackpool Zoo's plan for new big cats house approved

Lions and tigers at Blackpool Zoo are to get a new and improved home after refurbishment plans were backed.

Part of the attraction's current big cats enclosure will be demolished under the zoo's proposals and replaced with a larger structure. It will also feature two public viewing dens, a security fence and accommodation for keepers.

It marks the first major investment since the multimillion-pound Project Elephant Base Camp opened in 2018.
 
hi can anyone please help and tell me which is the dominant female elephant at Blackpool zoo thanks

Yes I thought as much. I was intregued because I was looking at Blackpool project elephant base camp and it said that minbu allowed Kate to be dominant at first but I thought this would have changed

Kate is noted to be a dominant elephant:

Since the introduction of her new herd mates, Kate has asserted herself as a dominant elephant to be resepected.

However, Minbu is the most dominant/matriarch:

Noorjahan is respectful of the herd's matriarch, even though she towers above Minbu in size.

Minbu was also the matriarch at her previous zoo:

Minbu, originally born and raised in a logging camp, had always been the dominant female whilst living at Twycross, known as a matriarch.

Yep, Minbu's the most dominant girl. In order of hierarchy it would go something like: Minbu, Kate, Tara, Noorjahan and then Esha. Noorjahen likes to spend time away from the main group, often accompanied by her calf, Esha. Kate is also pretty dominant, although not as much as Minbu, and she shares a close bond with Tara.

In this news article from soon after his arrival, the following was described about Emmett: "He gives off this aura which the females gravitate towards. The best way to describe it, really, is he has got swagger. He just swans about. He's the man and nobody dares dispute that."

It was also mentioned they hoped Noorjahan and Tara would fall pregnant, although obviously neither have fallen pregnant thus far (and its been two years now). Tara's last calf was born in 2012, so hopefully there's still a chance.

I have high hopes for Emmett considering he’s a proven breeder. Emmett sired 15 calves to multiple cows (most through natural breeding) between 2002 and 2016.

Noorjahan last bred in 2014 and Tara last bred in 2012, so it’s been a while since their last calves; but they’re both young (27 and 24 respectively) and will hopefully be successful in conceiving soon if they haven’t already - the zoo will likely wait a while into the pregnancy to announce it.
 
How do we know that non of the Elephants are pregnant. I have never known a zoo to announce when an animal is pregnant only when a baby is born because so much can go wrong in a pregnancy. Like previously stated, emmet has been at Blackpool for around 2 years but he probably hasn't been with the females for the first few months when he arrived and the gestation period is 22 months. I'm sure that I have read some info somewhere that you can only really tell whether an elephant is pregnant after 1 year of pregnancy so if that was the case both Tara and Noorjahan could be pregnant but under the 1 year mark. Also I am of the understanding that before emmet, the twycross Elephants didn't have a male and calves at twycross were born through AI could this be a limitation if Tara and Noorjahan have never seen or been around a bull. Also on a side note, would minbu be able to have a calf because although she is older, I'm sure she is around the age of Thi who lived at chester when she had her last calf. Hopefully once Esha is older she will be able to have calves as well.

That’s a lot of questions!

We don’t know for sure the cows aren’t pregnant. Pregnancy can be diagnosed as early as three months gestation. Num Oi at Melbourne Zoo was inseminated via AI in August 2014, with the pregnancy confirmed and announced in November that year.

It varies from zoo to zoo, but most seem to announce the pregnancy around the 12 month mark. Aside from the fact, the unborn calf is past the critical first few months; the staff probably get sick of people asking when the elephant is due.

No, I wouldn’t expect Minbu to conceive. Her last calf was in 1998 and elephants who are past 24 years of age and have had a birth interval of 10 years or more struggle to conceive. Thi at Chester had calves at regular intervals, allowing her to reproduce into her later years.
 
I have a visit to Blackpool Zoo planned for the middle of next month, I'm planning to go down there by train quite early in the morning because I also want to fit in a visit to Sea Life Blackpool on the same day. This will be my first visist since I was a kid in the mid 2000's, so for those who go to Blackpool Zoo regularly, roughly how long would I need to get around the whole site and see everything? Because I want to have a decent amount of time left over for that Sea Life Blackpool visit as well.
 
It possibly depends on how long that you would like to stay at each enclosure. I have been a few times and stopped all day and been around at least twice. I think that you could be done in 2 possibly 3 hours but I ciukd be wrong

Unless you have a strong logistical reason for doing it the other way round, I'd say to do the SeaLife first if you're definitely doing both. It won't take very long and then you can spend as long as you like at the zoo. :)

You can do the zoo comfortably in 3-4 hours though on an average speed I'd say.

Thank you for the help, I probably will do the Sea Life visit first then move on to the zoo. I'm guessing the World of Wings aviary and Rainbow Landings will probably still be closed by the time I'm planning to visit, so that should free up at least a bit of time.

It’s also worth noting the sea life center opens an hour earlier than the zoo so it would also make sense doing them this way round to give you more time
