The last Greater Kudu left Marwell in 2014.Good news. Anybody know what happened to the greater kudu?
Thank you. Was there a particular reason they went out of them & into the lessers? The last Greater Kudu left Marwell in 2014.
It was when the new area for Wild Explorers was built and the Greater Kudu were not part of that, the numbers for Greater Kudu had gone down over the years, only five animals left at one time the group was over twenty, Lesser Kudu arrived in 2016 from Edinburgh.Thank you. Was there a particular reason they went out of them & into the lessers?
Marwell being Marwell I guess! For a long while they seemed to be on a downhill race to dispose of animals. Promising signs this is turning round now.Thank you. Was there a particular reason they went out of them & into the lessers?
The last leopard has died, as has the last cheetah. The cheetah have now been replaced with serval, though the leopard enclosure remains empty. If anything, I'd say some kind of cat..Been to marwell today and a few questions arose for this visit where did the amur leopards go and what will replace them and where did the Cheetahs go.
Yes, fully discussed and lamented in both cases. Plus much discussion on replacement species. We’re those loses announced on the forum? If so, I must have missed them. To lose those two species would be a big loss for marwell..
"millions"?! Please don't exaggerate. While some fencing was removed to open the lower enclosure to the the giraffe paddock, the house and other enclosures remain, currently used by Serval, so still useful carnivore accommodation.Plus the lunacy of having spent millions on Cheetah Rock
Very happy servals I guess...only to have it given over to Serval, really gets my goat!
I was not exaggerating. I was quoting what was touted at the time as the overall cost of the Cheetah Rock development."millions"?! Please don't exaggerate. While some fencing was removed to open the lower enclosure to the the giraffe paddock, the house and other enclosures remain, currently used by Serval, so still useful carnivore accommodation.
Thanks Gary. When was this & under what thread? Can’t believe I missed such crucial news!Yes, fully discussed and lamented in both cases. Plus much discussion on replacement species.
To lose another 2 big cat species has been a major blow to the appeal of a visit, and both should be urgently restocked/replaced.
Plus the lunacy of having spent millions on Cheetah Rock only to have it given over to Serval, really gets my goat!
Savannah Tracks, as the development was initially called, certainly did not cost "millions" - it was considerably less than that, nearer £250,000. Interestingly, the Serval have returned to the area where this species was kept in the early days of Marwell's opening.I was not exaggerating. I was quoting what was touted at the time as the overall cost of the Cheetah Rock development.
Fair enough!Savannah Tracks, as the development was initially called, certainly did not cost "millions" - it was considerably less than that, nearer £250,000. Interestingly, the Serval have returned to the area where this species was kept in the early days of Marwell's opening.
Not only the early days but quite a bit later too, until at least 2005 if not longer.Savannah Tracks, as the development was initially called, certainly did not cost "millions" - it was considerably less than that, nearer £250,000. Interestingly, the Serval have returned to the area where this species was kept in the early days of Marwell's opening.
