Monterey Bay Aquarium Major deep sea animal exhibit coming to MBA

Also I'm officially meeting Paul Clarkson tomorrow! (if you don't know who he is, he's the director of husbandry operations, so he's kind of like the boss of all the animal stuff, especially for this exhibit). I've been in talks with him here and there so we'll see if anything happens tomorrow (i.e. maybe a preview ? that would be amazing) but just being able to meet him is awesome and I'll see if I can ask him a few questions about the exhibit as well

These species are now confirmed:

On display

Arbiter snailfish (in coral tank)
Purple/magenta lampocteis (in same tank as bloodbellies may be hard to see differences because of the background)

BTS
Amber Lobate (bts may be on display with the blood bellies later)
Red mysid (bts planned earlier but did not make good exhibit animals as they stuck to glass. were planned to be where the cliones are)

Thanks to Northwest fish keeping

Today was absolutely amazing. I met up with Paul Clarkson, Pat, and Em at the Aquarium. And to my surprise:
-we talked for a bit
-They gave us a tour of the Jelly Lab and I talked with Tommy and Howard for a bit
-Tommy took us to the DEEP-SEA JELLY LAB! Can't post all the pics but I am allowed to post 1
-Got a Behind the Scences of the Open Sea Tank
-GOT A SPECIAL PREVIEW OF INTO THE DEEP!

I can't thank them enough, it was absolutely amazing. Pics are on the way

That's all! I wish I got more, but I spent a large majority of my time photographing the Sea Angels, Bloody Bellies, and Red X's haha along with some Behind the Scenes stuff which I'll touch on now

This is still on going research but yes, there is this wildy awesome looking Bloody Belly Comb Jelly they've nicknamed the "Amber Lampo" behind the scenes right now. As well as the Purple one on display right now, which I'll send a picture of. There's research going on to see if these are just different varieties, or if they're actually new species.

-Those Red Shrimps are Gnathophausia ingens, which were the same species on display in the Old Deep Sea Exhibit. Tommy told me these were actually in the spot of the Sea Angels, but they were taken off display since: They absolutely LOVE to hang by the walls. Which is true, the 10 - 15 minutes we were by their tank, only 2 truly swam and it was so they could move to the other side of the tank lol. They would be almost non-viewable so they took them off. They still could be a possible display animal, but probably once the Aquarium figures out how to make it pleasing to view them.

-There are no Balloon Worms on display right now, but they have like 50 or 60 of them Behind the Scenes in the Deep-Sea Jelly Lab. They're an animal they plan to put on display for sure, and fun Fact Tommy told me:
They're currently working on a way to display both the Balloon Worms AND Sea Angels in the SAME tank. For whatever reason, they do really well together. I should've asked more about that. So maybe we'll see a Sea Angel/Balloon Worm tank in the future.

-The Aquarium has spawned Bloody Belly Comb Jellies before in the past. The eggs are bright blue and quite large, and they were able to hatch them. Unfortunately not able to raise them but that's still awesome. They're currently working on how to make them spawn reliably

Theres so many behind the scenes pics I'd love to send, but waiting on confirmation from Paul Clarkson first.

Which did you find most surprising in person?
Sounds weird to say but honestly everyone fits how you see them online! They're all super friendly, super knowledgeable, and super awesome.
Although if I was forced to pick, probably Emily just because of her height. I believe she's 6ft tall? I knew that before but you can see the real height difference she and Pat have compared to Paul and I in the first pic haha

I meant the animals lol

Oh haha my bad

That's gotta go to the Bloody Bellies 100%
Seeing them in Pictures and Videos is nothing compared to seeing them in real person. They're so stunning to watch, especially the cilia moving with all the Rainbows it's amazing.
Another one are the Sea Angels, mainly due to their size. They're only about the size of your finger nail

I've watched a few videos of them and they're amazing! They seem to be the stars of the show right now.

I read that the other day, I guess I never thought about their size but I definitely would have thought they were bigger than that. Several of the species seem on the small size.

Went back today and spent almost the whole day in Into the Deep! Guess what. So some of us were speculating whether the Bone Worms on display were a new species since they're just labeled as "Osedax spp." Turns out, while photographing them with my Sony 90mm Macro Lens, there's actually multiple species! Well, multiple as in 2 but there could be more.
The first is this red colored one that's V shaped, and the second is a orange colored one that has 3 Tentacles or 3 individuals, but im leaning more towards Tentacles. I asked Matt Wandell from the Aquarium what species these are so I'll update once that's through, but for now enjoy these Bone Worm Macros
