ZooChat Challenge Global 2022

Have you seen the new Hymalaya? Are the Pikas on display already?

Yes I visitied the area. No pikas an I think the area that was meant for them is now used for
Père David's rock squirrel. I don't know any details but I suspect that the pikas didn't make it. We need to wait for the annual report to confirm what ist the situation here.

This challenge has made me realised how poorly represented geckoes are among my local collections. Off the top of my head, there is a Centralian Knob-tail Gecko on-display at Currumbin and that’s actually it. I hope there are some species off-show somewhere – they surely can do a lot better than that!

On a happier note, I was overjoyed to finally see an actual leopard in the flesh for the first time!! The Striped Possum was another lovely addition to see as well as for the first time. I had a chat with the keeper there and there is only a pair at Wildlife Habitat and the rescued male at Walkabout who has some pretty serious spinal issues, totalling only three Striped Possums in Australian zoos.

Visit to Pafos Zoo on Thursday, with another one coming on Monday I reckon (missed a few small cats and geckos):

19. Crested porcupine, Hystrix cristata
20. Egyptian fruit bat, Rousettus aegyptiacus
21. Eurasian lynx, Lynx lynx
22. Striped hyena, Hyaena hyaena
23. Great grey owl, Strix nebulosa
24. Tokay gecko, Gekko gecko

Much fewer than I expected, with the skunk, coati, raccoon and several owl species gone...
Hopefully will get a couple more on Monday or whenever.

Second visit to Pafos:

25. Dwarf crocodile, Ostreolamus tetraspis
26. Leopard gecko, Eublepharis macularius
27. Caracal, Caracal caracal

Ocelots stayed well out of sight so that's it for Pafos. Pretty tiny total so far this year - hopefully I can redeem myself with a trip to Hamerton. There's potential for some other French zoos as well but we'll have to see.

Sea Life is not my cup of tea, but combination of Olympiastadion, BMW World and the "Germany's largest variety of Sharks" at Olympiapark spark my interest. They claimed more than 20 spieces, but they are not all on show . Ztl lists Starry smooth-hound and Common smooth-hound, which are not displayed, for example. Nevertheless the diversity of small sharks is quite impressive, indeed.

Finally I have finished this- it was very confusing but I understood the species included in the challenge more towards the end of writing list for all of the species I had seen that counted. It also helped that I could look at what species others had listed from visiting Hamerton (thanks guys). Hopefully I will be able to cope better next time- there will probably be less species to deal with anyway.

Hamerton Zoo Park 6th March: (my first visit)
9. Binturong (Arcitis binturong) I'm not sure if this was the Javan species as I think there was youngsters, they were in the first enclosure on the right as you enter the zoo, I saw them indoors with 3 individuals in the left section and 1 on the right.
10. Long nosed potoroo (Potorus tridactylus)
11. Fat sand rat (Psammomys obesus)
12. Snowy Owl (Bubo scandiacus)

22. Corsac Fox (Vulpes corsac)
23. Eurasian harvest mouse (Micromys minutus)
24. Canadian lynx (Lynx canadensis)
25. Serval (Leptailurus serval)
26. Meerkat (Suricata suricatta) this works out quite well as this spot was for Dingo, then I realised it had been confirmed that they didn't count. I have now replaced this with meerkats as previously I thought they didn't count as no one else from a Hamerton visit had listed them but then I realised that a post I hadn't previously seen had listed them. Confusing but convenient.
27. Tayra (Eira barbara)
28. White Tiger (Panthera tigris)
29. Malayan Tiger (Panthera tigris jacksoni)
30. Eastern Aardwolf (Proteles cristata septentrionalis)

This took a lot of effort but now I am finished I will begin to post more of my media from my zoo visits this year.
Colchester Zoo 14/4/2022 I visited today for my Aardvark Keeper Shadowing Experience:
30. Southern Tamandua (Tamandua tetradactyla)
31. Spotted Hyena (Crocuta crocuta)
32. Amur Leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis)

I just realised I missed out Fennec Fox from my other Colchester visit this year
