Twycross Zoo Twycross Zoo News 2022

You are thinking of the very old Elephant house which was built in the 60s. It was knocked down before it fell down I guess end of 1990 and rebuilt with red bricks to house the Bonobos and some Gorillas.

The last Elephant house (now for Rhinos) was completed around 1991 and only had 1 large paddock to start off with before expansion with a bridge around 1998.

Do Twycross have plans to build in the future behind the Gibbon Forest and Tigers?

I would think its there natural expansion route in the future, given all there plans are based around both animal welfare and increasing visitor numbers. The have been using the area now for access and storing of building materials for the recent developments along that side of the zoo inc the gruffalo area. I would think it hasn’t been bought into the zoos perimeter area yet for tax perposes and of course development costs. If you google an aerial photo of the zoo you can see the tracks and on the right photo you may also see some building materials storage

Yes I look at Twycross Zoo on Google Earth regularly and have noticed a lot of building materials stored behind the Gibbons and Tigers.

I think part of that field will be for the new conservation building with new ape enclosures nearby. I can't wait to see that all built up.

Yes, the space directly below the Tigers and Gibbons was earmarked for a “university campus” in the original master plan, which I’m guessing we can now safely assume evolved to become the National Science Centre they’re building.

The larger field to the right of this space (behind Gruffalo Discovery Trail) was also earmarked as future expansion space too. But I can’t see that happening for another 10+ years until after they’ve modernised most of the existing site.

I haven't seen any of the future plans and drawings since about 2015 (apart from the new campus) before the buildings for Giraffes, Gibbons, Tigers and Chimps. I don't know what other plans the zoo has but I would love to see more future plans and drawings.

Yes I think Twycross will be knocking down a lot of existing enclosures in the coming years before expanding into other fields as a lot of animals really need new modern homes (esp primates).

So done Twycross today, packed as to be expected but they seam to have all the kiosks open and lots of staff on to cope with demand the zoo was all good with most if not all the animals on show tigers, chimps, rhino all outside enjoying the weather. The flamingos where also out the chick is just starting to get his pink feathers through now and the avries are back open with disinfectant mats on entrance and exits. Now then the gruffalo, I was quite impressed to be honest as where everyone around us and we walked through. Just to be clear it’s in the zoo but not part of the zoo and I think Twycross are emphasising this also by having signs at the exit directing you back to the zoo. It’s it’s own area and given what was there before much much better. I took us nearly an hour to traverse with the large amount of people there but was both interesting and captivating and well done, yes there aren’t many animals there the owl and the snake and both current residents moved in from the zoo but with nice new enclosures in particular the snake along with hornbills and the goats but like I said it’s not trying to be part of the zoo but a completely different area alongside the zoo that has been done well along with the cafe and gift shop there as a redevelopment I would say well done to Twycross

Does anyone know where the black and gold howler monkeys are located? I can't find them anywhere. I suppose I could ask.....

They’re in the smaller of the two monkey houses. The one directly behind the guest services building. Or they were at least.

I’m sure the last time I saw them was in the enclosure on its own between the meerkats and the orangutans, so if you see them inside your on the meerkat side but outside is on the orangutans side of the wall so you have to go all the way round and hope they haven’t go in by the time you get there :)

I really wish they'd get rid of the barriers they've put everywhere, it makes it so awkward to get round the zoo.

Just got back from the zoo. It was very busy with it being bank holiday and there wasn't much out to be honest.

Nothing much to report apart from you can now get to the indoor viewing area for the Orangutans. Kayan was on her own outside with access to the smaller indoor area. Maliku, Basuki and Batu were all indoors.

Could anyone tell me we’re the Nyala, Dikdik, wallaby’s and smooth coated otters are please ???

Nyala are sharing with the Giraffes but they have their old little house at the opposite end.

Kirk's Dik-Dik are in one of the enclosures just parallel to the Rhino paddocks, going up towards the Owls.

I don't know on the Wallabies, and I did read on Zootierliste that they now have Smooth-coated Otters but I am guessing they are offshow somewhere.

Kira the last Amur leopard cub is of to America at the end of this week
