Franklin Park Zoo Franklin Park Zoo News 2022

In terms of the flight cage, Painted Dog said it was under construction to remove and redo the outdated paint in their FPZ Review a couple weeks ago.

If this is truly the case, I wonder if the zoo will continue exhibiting condors or return to a free-flight aviary with various different species. I know the paint was the reason they switched to condors in the first place.

The condors are currently behind the scenes at The Stone Zoo and the Stellars Sea Eagle is behind the scenes at Franklin Park while the flight cage is being renovated. This is according to a zoo keeper I chatted with during my last visit.

As for an earlier comment suggesting a Walmart around the flight cage, there already is access around most is the flight cage. The Sea Eagle is best viewed from behind the flight cage too. I disagree avoid removing the inner walkway as it provides excellent close viewing of the condors.

When was the flight cage used as a free flight aviary?

The zoo recently updated their map with a couple minor edits. The main notable thing is that the flight cage has been relabelled as "raptor ridge". This label change may indicate that construction on the area is complete. However, this is speculative, as I have not been to the zoo recently to confirm in person.

It was far from complete on my visit on the 4th. All paths to the area were closed, I could go in the building but that's it.

I went to the zoo today for the first time in a couple months. Here’s everything notable I observed on my visit:
  1. There was a new metal giraffe statue at the giraffe entrance
  2. There was some construction going on by the exit of the tropical forest, by the Folly. A ton of foliage was cleared from the hillside, and there was some rubble on the edge of the pathway. The area was also roped off with yellow “do not enter” tape. I don’t know what the construction was for. Does anyone have any ideas? @PercideRolo do you know?
  3. Sam, the (1.0) ruppell’s griffon vulture, was moved to a zoo in Texas. He formerly had a mixed species enclosure with the pygmy hippos. He was moved so that he could have a social situation with another vulture, and also because cohabitating with the hippos was very stressful for him.
  4. Ptolemy, the (1.0) two year old pygmy hippo, has begun the process of separating from his mother, Cleopatra. Cleopatra is around 30 years old, and has apparently been losing some weight, so keepers began the separation process partly to give her some alone time and to keep a closer eye on her.
  5. The indoor tapir exhibit has undergone a few modifications- the exhibit was power washed to remove all fecal stains, the woodpile barriers were replaced with mesh fence, and the exhibit’s secondary pool was filled in with concrete (most people probably never knew there was a secondary pool to begin with, because the wood piles obstructed the view of it)
  6. A couple of shade structures were added to gorilla grove. They are basically flat fabric sails which rest on the mesh on the top of the exhibit.
  7. The indoor gorilla habitat had a couple new vines added
  8. A new shortcut path was paved going straight from the tropical forest entrance to the exit of the budgie aviary
  9. Today was coincidentally Menelik’s ((1.0) Grevy’s Zebra) 25th birthday.

No idea about exit. I think they work on rook just like the lion one. Lots of projects going on. Was told it is for upkeep. Taper concrete is another feeding area just like hippo.

What did they do to the Lion one? Hopefully these small upkeep projects wrap up soon and the zoo can start working on their next major addition now that it seems like gorilla grove as a success.

It falling apart and they preserve it. You can walk into it now. Hospital, entrance, zoo store and penguin are new project. Worker said the forest tent needs replacement which why gorilla exhibit was done.
