Global Sanctuary for Elephants has a new, tentative plan to relocate 0.1 Pocha and 0.1 Guillermina from the Mendoza Ecopark to Elephant Sanctuary Brazil in February 2021. The official relocation timeline will be determined once the GSE relocation team arrives in Argentina, and both elephants complete additional training and their 30-day, in-house quarantine.

0.1 Pocha and 0.1 Guillermina’s relocation from the Mendoza Ecopark to Elephant Sanctuary Brazil is forthcoming as more milestones are reached. Since arriving in Mendoza, Argentina, back in early February, trainers Karissa Reinbold and Chrissy Pratt have been working extensively with Pocha and Guillermina to ensure they are properly trained for the noninvasive medical procedures needed to do quarantine. With the arrival of the transport crates, Karissa and Chrissy are now expanding on the separation training with Pocha and Guillermina to prepare them for the move. Once Pocha and Guillermina have completed their final quarantine training and are comfortable being separated in their own crates for extended periods of time, the pair will undergo their 30-day, in-house quarantine. Once they have completed quarantine, Pocha and Guillermina will be ready for the journey to Elephant Sanctuary Brazil.

Bireki is most likely being sent on a breeding loan to Culiacán so she can pair up with Big Boy. Bireki is the only asian elephant of breeding age in México. Zacango zoo will not be without elephants, so Ted is staying. In contrast to Bireki, Ted has a mean disposition. Es un elefante medio maloso, they say in Zacango. Indeed, i remember When he thru his poop at me once. He does this often.Need i say that Ted has Good aim and that he does not Miss. But many Zacango visitors love him with his surprises.

Actually, it seems Bireki was born in 1991 and never had a calf so it’s most likely she’s too old for breeding for her first calf.

Bireki herself was born to her mother when Tamy was in her 30s and was her first and only calf also Big Boy is castrated.

Tammy’s DOB was estimated as 1960, so she was indeed 31 years of age when her only calf, Bireki, was born in 1991.

This would make her a statistical outlier though - with early to mid twenties commonly accepted as the upper range for a first time dam of this species with regards to best reproductive practice.

If Big Boy is castrated, then it appears the move is for companionship purposes - though the companionship of other cows would be preferable.

Wow. Interesting.
If big boy is casterated, I wonder if he came from Ringling.

if they wanted to breed Bireki it would have to be to Ted, unless he’s casterated as well.

I’ve done some additional research and Big Boy was born at Busch Gardens 09/09/1983. He was indeed castrated, which is regarded as a risky procedure due to being so invasive.

I’d assume the reason was for a combination of management reasons and due to the over represented line he came from. His father sired 22 calves between 1983 and 1996.

Ted is not castrated, but may be a behavioural non breeder. I believe he’ll live out his days as a solitary bull.

yes Vance had plenty of calves but I believe casteration was part of the experiment as well. Plus they needed more elephants on the road versus back home during musth. Just my impression.

That makes sense.

I see Vance’s first six male offspring were castrated: Big Boy (1983), Smokey (1984), Luke (1985), Bo (1987), Caesar (1987-2006) and Ned (1987-2009); while all male offspring born from 1988 onwards were not. Many of these were sold to circuses such as Ringlings, who presumably wanted to breed from them.

The castration process in elephants is invasive and risky but if done correctly, is straight forward enough. It’s often carried out before the age of five. The six bulls listed above all survived the procedure.
