Tennōji Zoo Osaka Zoo News

I haven't heard anything, though their seems to be several petitions against the zoo receiving new elephants. I wouldn't be surprised if their exhibit is repurposed for a new species long term (it currently holds two roosters).

That's one thing I haven't heard! Elephants being replaced by roosters. Quite an interesting decision to say the least. :p

I'm not sure Osaka will continue with elephants. There hasn't been any recent updates of an import, and I wouldn't be surprised if their enclosure will be inhabited by a new species over the long term.

I'm glad Auckland Zoo haven't taken inspiration! :p

I believe it happened more by incident than design, though the roosters are apparently notable enough to warrant this article on them: Osaka zoo’s ‘miracle’ roosters become stars instead of prey | The Asahi Shimbun: Breaking News, Japan News and Analysis

The zoo holds both Common and Pygmy hippopotamus, so I could see the zoo remodeling the elephant exhibit for one of them. The outdoor exhibit features a pool and the infrastructure of the elephant house could easily be adapted to meet their needs.

Auckland does have some free range roosters sharing their elephant enclosure though.;)

I doubt roosters will be a long term replacement for their elephants. Osaka's enclosure is quite small for them, and it would be much better suited for a small herbivore species such as rhinos (the zoos holds both Black and White). The zoo already has a decent enough Hippo enclosure complete with an underwater viewing so I don't think they'll be used as a replacement.

Looking at their map, Osaka Zoo seem quite dedicated to grouping exhibits by biome. I doubt we'd see white rhinos, black rhinos or Common hippos making the move across to the Asian Rainforest given they're currently in the Savannah; but a Congo species isn't out of the question given the exhibit is bordered by the gorilla exhibit i.e. it need not be another Asian species.

The length of time this exhibit has sat empty makes me think they've been holding out hope they'll receive more elephants; but have since reached the conclusion it won't be happening and are exploring alternatives. Indian rhinoceros would be cool, even if they're not a rainforest species.

I'll be excited to see what they decide. It's a reasonable space with a lot of potential.

Osaka does not have gorillas. I believe you are referring to the chimpanzees.

My bad, they looked liked gorillas on the map to me (albeit females); though the point stands about an African species bordering the Asian Tropical Rainforest.

It’ll be interesting to see what replaces the elephants if they don’t get more. There’s a lot of potential for this exhibit space and I look forward to hearing what happens to it.

So it seems like there have been some constructions and upgrades going on in Tennoji zoo. I don’t have a clear grasp on exactly how many projects are going in but so far I found out that the sea lion exhibit got a facelift, there are plans to make a immersive Japanese pond turtle exhibit in the reptile house, and the crane enclosures are closed for renewal. Per the map, the Asian area and the petting zoo area seem to be closed or under construction. Also based on a sign next to the sea lion enclosure facelift, polar bears might be getting a new enclosure but take this as a speculation.

Hello everyone:

As I already explained in another thread, I'm going to travel to Japan with a friend in May. We'll visit Tokyo, Toba, Atagawa and Osaka. We'll only be in Osaka for one day: we'll sleep there one night and the next day we'll visit the Aquarium and the Tennoji Zoo, as well as trying to see the most important tourist places. Later, we'll return to Tokio in the night if it's possible. We prioritize above all the aquarium. My question regarding the zoo is: How long does it take to be visited? I know there aren't many rarities here, but being a Japanese zoo I'm sure we'll be able to see some species that don't exist in Europe or USA. We would appreciate advice for the visit, although we will try to keep it short in order to enjoy the aquarium more and to be able to see tourist places later. Thank you very much in advance.

So far I found:

Varanus rosenbergi kept around at May 2022 and

Calyptocephalella caudiverbera
kept around at 2018.

I wouldn’t expect the frog to still be standing to this day.

Otherwise I wouldn’t expect the zoo to take long. Parts of the zoo is under construction so, along with the atrociously outdated areas, I wouldn’t expect the zoo to be eye candy.

I did the zoo in like 2.5 hours. Keep in mind its 2018 though.
Also the aquarium close later than the zoo. (like 5pm vs 8pm? sth similar)

Our intention is to visit the aquarium from the moment it opens to the public, stay as long as necessary and then go to the zoo. After the zoo closes, we want to visit the tourist sites in Osaka and return to Tokyo at night. How many hours are necessary to visit the Aquarium?

Wait, you're still sleeping in Tokyo that night? With the JR pass it's feasible, but it's still a long shinkansen ride.

I still don't know for sure if we'll travel from Toba or directly from Tokyo, but that night we would sleep in Osaka yes or yes. The next day we would see the aquarium, the zoo and the tourist places and we would return to Tokyo at night with Shinkansen. I think the origin wll be Toba.

So turns out the new Sea lion enclosure is a new one rather than a renovation. Along with the sea lions, the Humboldt penguins also got a new enclosure which is a bigger upgrade compared to what the sea lions had. Here is a news report showing the new enclosures along with the animals being caught and transported from their old enclosures.

I have a feeling that because they kept the barn, they may actually be expanding the elephant space - which does look to be a sizeable amount of land.

Alternatively, it could also be a part of the polar bear development, though given that it still says "Asian Tropical Rain Forest" on the zoo's map...
