The zoo is reopening July 2, but only through free pre-booked guided tours of the zoo area in July and August. You can book on their website only if you are a resident of the Peterborough Public Health region.

The zoo had a unexpected moment as well when a takin broke into a neighboring exhibit. He was tranquilized and returned home.

During the closure there have been some changes.

Capybara, Pablo, got a pool.

Toronto just sent them 25 poison dart frogs.

A couple of Sulawesi forest turtles have hatched and will be on display in the gift shop.

A new block of tour tickets are available for reservation.

Upgrades are being completed on the lynx, serval and Bactrian camel habitats. Looks like for the lynx and serval they are getting glass viewing areas. Not sure whats happening with the camels.

The zoo is offering tours to more and more people and people who live outside of their health region.

They have also adopted 2 alpacas who are retiring from Trent University's animal care program.

The zoo has 4 new chickens in the barnyard with their pigs, alpaca and rabbit.

At some point they have picked up two more takin bringing their total to 3, Bamboo, Gansu, and Yao-Ming.

The zoo is working on a fund raiser to raise $650 000 to replace the train.

Congratulations to the zoo. As of Nov 26 it will finally reopen to the public after nearly 2 years. Its been a long time but I bet locals will be thrilled to return.

The zoo has a new Eurasian lynx, Hudson. He is living in the exhibit beside female Hazard.

They also have a new golden pheasant, Ramsey, representing a new species for the zoo. No mention of females with him.

32 year old sloth, Ferrari, has passed away. This unfortunately leaves the zoo without a sloth as his long time mate Porsche passed in 2019.

There has been several acts of vandalism at the zoo over the last few weeks, including damage to the train and the theft of the 50 year old brass train bell.

On May 10th, it was announced that the zoo transferred (1.1.1) red-necked wallabies named Wallace, Florence, and The Machine to the Toronto Zoo in Ontario.

On May 12th, the zoo announced they received a $25,000 donation from the Rotary Club of Peterborough Kawartha for the funding of a new train in 2023.

On May 21st, the zoo announced that a storm came in and knocked down several trees throughout the zoo, though no animals/staff were injured. The facility opened a couple days later.

The zoo will be doing a special Seasonal Conservation Exhibit this summer highlighting some of their conservation programs including axolotl, West African dwarf crocs (including their 2 hatchlings), and poison dart frogs.

A fire at the zoo has caused approximately $40 000 in damage to the zoo's primate building May 8th. Staff were able to rescue all the building's animals while firefighters fought the flames in the buildings attic. Thankfully everyone is safe and sound. The zoo was able to reopen later in the day.

On April 5th, the zoo announced that it was raising funds for improvements towards the slender-tailed meerkat exhibit, including a new screened structure, enhanced glass viewing areas, and meerkat-friendly planting/landscaping, among other changes.
