La Barben Parc Zoologique Barben news

Fantastic. I searched in Google for look what on Earth is the name of this species, and I see, is one of the pamphagids (elephant grasshoppers). There are several endemic species of small areas in the Mediterranean, tought this one is just a mere subspecies of a much more widespread one. Anyway, the fact of a zoo keeping a local pamphagid species makes me a much greater zoo to my eyes. I wish Spanish zoos would do the same with local species of endemic endangered pamphagids and any other noteworthy endemic insects.

The "Criquet de Crau" is recognized as a full species by the IUCN (Prionotropis rhodanica) with a CR status and an endemic range from very few stations in Southern France.
However, I recognize that several sibling species live in other areas along the Mediterranean, including other French places.
Here's the current IUCN page for this species :

It was just revealed but La Barben welcome a southern white rhino calf called Jahely last august 30th. Unfortunately he was rejected by his mother and was handreared by zoo keepers. Now the little boy is on show since november 15th. This birth was expected for four years since a switch of bull.
This is the third birth of rhino for this year for France.

In press release for this year it has been confirmed that the park is building a new exhibit for komodo dragons with outdoor space.
Another project is the construction of a 4 000 square meters savannah for common hippos and zebras !

First successful breeding of the endemic crickets Prionotropis rhodanica in La Barben Zoo.
This park runs a special center to breed this species, that lives only in the Crau plains in Southern France, and that has a CR status.
