Jokes Only a Zoochatter Would Understand

Why is it controversial again, I believe I've heard of it before...?

It was controversial because many people disagreed with it’s inclusion in the top 50. Their reasoning was largely based on the fact it isn’t a regulation zoo you can walk around (private tours only) and the tour costs $400.

Several people, while acknowledging the exhibits are expansive and highly impressive, said they couldn’t justify spending that amount of money to see species they can readily see at affordably priced zoos.

I didn't know this zoo at all, but in effect, according to Wikipedia, most animals are common in zoos, except the Florida Panther, the Gerenuk, the Dama Gazelle, the Roan Antelope and perhaps 2 or 3 birds.
Among the moŕe common species, only the herd of Asian Elephants (sent by a circus) and the crash of White Rhinos look really unusual.
The others look standard, as well as the enclosures that look like plain grassy paddocks, not really impressive (at least) for Europeans.

And for what it’s worth, Florida panthers are probably the same subspecies as all other North American cougars…

I'm both a Zoochatter and French and I still don't understand this, I can't lie...
I guess it's something to do with Sable = Sand in French but?
It's about the print ad of a perfume popular in the 1990's "Sand & Sable".
It used to be compared to the cat litter scents.
Interestingly the word "sable" is the French word for the sand, also the name of the prized fur of a small mustelid (Martes zibellina, from the Polish word sobół).
Additionnally the expression "who needs" can sound like the voice of a small cat.
The entire joke about the Sand & Sable perfume has inspired the famous song "smelly cat" in the TV series Friends (one episode contained even allusions to the sand cats !).

Sample of an episode of Friends (The one at the beach, season 3, last episode), a famous comedy TV series that I loved at this time, but without understanding all the hidden or secret senses :

"Monica: What’s with all this sand? (picking a handful of sand off of the floor, which is covered in sand)

Phoebe: Oh, yeah, Bob said there might be flood damage.

Ross: Yeah, either that, or he has a really big cat." [...]

Rachel: (getting up) All right, I’m gonna make more margaritas! (She pours the rest of the pitcher into Ross’s glass.)

Ross: Whoa, hey! What are doing? Trying to get me drunk?

Rachel: I’m just making margaritas."

The entire script, if you are interested : http://friendsfr.free.fr/scripts/325toab.htm
