Obviously, a welcome breeding result!

What year was she born?

BTW: You know as no other Rotterdam-Blijdorp has had no reproductive pair for a long time. And the elderly pair was euthanised some time earlier and happily quite recently they received 0.2 from Poland (to restart in a refurbished enclosure).
 
In December last year a female Cabot's tragopan (Tragopan caboti) arrived from Chester Zoo.

In March Lemur leaf frogs (Agalychnis lemur) hatched, not sure if this is a first time breeding for Nordens Ark.

Two red panda's were born in the zoo last year, a male and a female. In April the male was send to Zoo Les Sables d´Olonne. The female was later send to Warsaw Zoo.

In June Mountain chickens (Leptodactylus fallax) hatched.

At the end of June the zoo had the world's first breeding of Rosalia longicorns (Rosalia Alpina)! They work together with Alpenzoo Inssbruck on a joint conservation project to save this threatened beetle, which is also known as the Alpine longhorn beetle. The two zoos have been working together since 2019 to develop a method to breed the beetles on a large scale which they could then use to reintroduce captive-bred individuals back into the wild in Austria.

In August Two Persian leopard cubs were born at the Leopard Recovery Center in Sochi National Park. The parents arrived from Nordens Ark last year. The cubs are in good health and hopefully will be reintroduced to the wild as part of the reintroduction project.

In September a European lowland-bison (Bison bonasus bonasus) was born, a first time breeding for the zoo!

Building an Ark for the world’s chelonians

Nordens Ark is currently building a unique facility to save some of the world's most endangered turtles.

More than 60% of all turtle species in the world are threatened with extinction. Although the situation is more alarming than for birds, mammals and amphibians, the turtle crisis has received relatively little attention and resources. This is something that Nordens Ark hope to change.

"Our Turtle Ark will be a haven for about 15 species that are all very close to extinction in the wild," says Emma Nygren, conservation biologist at Nordens Ark. Several of the species will disappear without intensive ex situ and in situ efforts.

The facility is unique and the only one of its kind in Northern Europe. It is being built in the middle of the animal park and will consists of both an area open for the public and a closed breeding facility. In the breeding facility, it will be possible to breed turtles on a larger scale in order to assist conservation projects with animals for release.

The biggest threats to the world’s chelonians are habitat loss and the illegal wildlife trade. The situation is most acute in Asia, where almost all turtle species are threatened.

"The focus will be on working with species from this region," Emma continues. We have also chosen to work with larger freshwater turtles as there is a need for such facilities.

The Turtle Ark will open early summer in 2023 and the hope is that the Ark will help ensure the survival of several turtle species until the situation in the wild improves.

A Finnish forest raindeer, Castor, was transferred into this zoo from Ranua Zoo, Finland.
There he has been given his own harem and he will hopefully be able to provide some important gene flow from the wild populations to zoo population.
 
Some Black Pond Turtles Geoclemmys hamiltonii have hatched last summer.

Sedan de kläcktes i somras har dessa småttingar blivit liiite större men sköldpaddor växer ofta väldigt långsamt och blir generellt mycket äldre än andra reptiler. Faktum är att pricksköldpaddor har en generationslängd på ungefär 20 år, vilket är tiden det tar från att en sköldpadda föds tills den själv kan få ungar. Nästan lika lång tid som för oss människor! Det betyder alltså att vi kommer få vänta ett tag till innan dessa små raringar kan få sina egna ungar.
