Zoo Birding

Hi everyone:

I haven't properly introduced myself. I will go by the name of macaw-maniac-91. As my username and photo would suggest, I have a love of macaws with a particular fondness for hyacinth macaws.

I have always been an inveterate love of birds (since I was two). I have kept birds off and on since I was 12, which was also the same time frame that I wanted to learn to be comfortable handling large macaws. By doing that, I have followed and befriended many in the avicultural community here in the United States. For all of my teenage years, I focused primarily on macaws but I've kept cockatiels, conures, and a handful of other species.

An animal I've kept an equally long love for are African bush elephants.

Other animals I'm fond of are the reticulated giraffe, Grévy's zebra, greater kudu, the black rhinoceros, jaguar, tigers, orangutans, oryxes, otters, crocodilians, snakes, and cephalopods (I especially love the nautiluses).

Of course it goes without saying I love and advocate what zoos do. My "home zoo" is Sacramento where my love of birds started with their resident flock of American flamingos. I didn't seriously start following the zoo community regarding birds until November of 2019 during an avicultural conference. I became aware of the software called ZIMS and was truly fascinated. Since then, I have been keeping my own personal records of birds I have seen during my visits to zoos since I'm only a layperson.

Here are the list of zoos, aquariums, and safaris I have visited so far:
  • Sacramento
  • Micke Grove Zoo
  • Oakland
  • Safari West
  • San Francisco
  • Aquarium of the Bay
  • Happy Hollow Park & Zoo
  • Monterey Bay Aquarium (Have not recorded their bird species in their aviary.. yet)
  • Los Angeles
  • San Diego Safari Park
  • San Diego Zoo
  • Brookfield Zoo
  • Lincoln Park Zoo
  • Zoo Atlanta
  • Zoo Miami
  • Jungle Island (Did NOT record the bird species there... yet)

A big goal of mine is to visit every zoo in the United States that have African bush elephants and the birds they have there but I also want to go to zoos where there are some bird species that either rare or uncommon.

Internationally speaking, there are three zoos that are on my life list:
  • Chester Zoo
  • Weltvogelpark Walsrode
  • Jurong Bird Park

I've taken up amateur bird photography and will occasionally post pictures of birds I have seen in the zoos I've visited from time to time.

For any other bird fanciers / enthusiasts, are there any other zoos I should look into that have impressive or rare birds in their collection? I'd love to hear about it.

Welcome to zoochat! Seeing you have a fond of birds, some notable bird zoos in US of A you might enjoy include: Tracy Aviary, National Aviary, Sylvian Heights and Dallas world Aquarium among others. Feel free to check out the gallery related to them
