Blackpool Zoo Blackpool Zoo News 2022

@Pertinax (The Ape Expert) and @Gigit do you share my prediction, about Blackpool’s new Male Orangutan being Jin or Balayan from Wingham? While on the subject of Blackpool’s Apes I think Maisie and Moanda should move on to breed ASAP. I think the Half-Sisters should move to London Zoo. Alternatively they could move to Bristol,in preparation for the relocation to Wild Place. I know there will be a 2 year gap between Bristol Zoo closing and relocating. Do you think the Gorillas will be on show at Wild Place within the next year? Surly a Gorilla Family enclosure could be constructed within 6 months. I think the Gorilla enclosure could open prior to Wild Place’s rebrand. Not only will visitors miss seeing the Gorillas but vise versa. If this were to happen Afia and Ayana could move to Blackpool. Thease Females are totally unrelated to Blackpool’s Gorillas. I’m sorry to veer off subject. Because of their ages it would make sense for Maisie and Moanda to move to the new Bristol Zoo.

Had a great visit yesterday.
At the elephant enclosure, emmett the bull was with the twycross females and Kate was on her own. It was like this all day is I visited them twice.
As of yet nothing has happened to the lion and tiger enclosure. The building is still open and so you can still view the old indoor housing and the meerkat too. Does anyone know when work will commence and where the new enclosures will be or what they will look like.
The younger gorilla's were very playful and were chasing each other and geese around the island.
I think i saw pretty much everything that there is to see and I will hopefully be visiting again next summer when the new big cat house is open

1. I've no idea what male Orangutan will replace Ramon at Blackpool, but one from Wingham would be a rational choice by reducing transfer bureaucracy, being already within the UK.

2. Re the two gorilla females. There are many options for where they might go, either seperately or together, both within the UK or into European groups. Only the EEP people know the answer to that and may not even have planned a move for them yet.

3. Afia and Ayana at Bristol are both too young to move from their natal group yet, they need to be at least 8 years old really.

4. It might take rather longer than 6 months to build a new gorilla facility at Wild Place I would think, especially as it will be the winter months coming on soon after the zoo closes. It'll be ready when its ready....

Any reason? I thought Kate had been fully integrated - the last time I visited was August '20 and she was with the others.

No idea why she was separated. I would have expected emmett not to be with the females but not Kate. The whole grass paddock was closed off all day which it did look quite muddy and boggy. So in the morning Kate had access to the rear sand paddock and rear indoor area and the others had the large sand paddock and the large indoor area. In the afternoon, Kate had access to the whole indoor area and the others were on the 2 sand paddocks outside.
On another note about the Elephants. Minbu tge oldest twycross elephant always very large. I'm of the understanding that she is a non breeding female because she is a little older but could she still get pregnant.

A male Orangutan named Kawan has arrived at the zoo. It doesn't say where he is from, the only Kawan I could find is from Apenheul Primate Park in the Netherlands born 2010. Does anyone know if this is the same Orangutan?

He looks like another young male orang. Is this not the issue they had with ramon because he joined the group when he was young. I was expecting a full grown adult male concidering the ages of summer and cherrie

I have seen confirmation elsewhere, this is the male from Apenheul.

Orangutans - according to information on Facebook, Kawan has already mated with Jingga and Cherie.
No surprises there...;)

Also Munster zoo have mentioned that they hope Ramon will breed with two of their 4 females, but as he never managed to in all his time at Blackpool, I wouldn't be very optimistic of that.

The difference is Ramon was handraised from a sickly infant, he came to Blackpool when still very small and was probably then dominated by the older females as well. This new male is mother-raised and properly socialised, the result is he has quickly mated with the females, irrespective of them being older and very long term established there.

Just want to ask a question for anyone who's been recently... is Kate still integrated with the rest of the herd? Because I haven't been since about August '20 - and when I went then, she was still with the others.

Has anything happened in that period?

Can anyone on here inform me about the status of the King Colobus group and whether or not there is scope to send breeding individuals to join the two at Paignton?
I’m not sure how to see the breeding co-ordinator info.

Well its a lot bigger than Paignton's- it usually seems to number around 8, up to a dozen sometimes.

A Vicuña has been born at the zoo - their first offspring of this species since 2017: Log into Facebook | Facebook
This is nice news, I didn't realise Blackpool Zoo had Vicuna, they must have been in the area I missed on my last visit, or perhaps I mistook them for llamas.
For anyone who's been recently, how far along is the redevelopment of the lion and tiger enclosures? I haven't been able to find much information about it since I last visited in May, and I'm holding off my next visit until they're done and the cats are back.

Kate has been with the herd often, she sometimes is separated for periods. The colobus group had over ten individuals on my last visit.

The vicuña were down by the tapirs, however, looking at the photos of the youngster, I believe they’ve moved up near the llamas/camels in the old Arabian gazelle enclosure I think. There’s also been dwarf mongoose born and an aardvark according to posts on social media. The aardvark is the first successful birth at Blackpool, born around eight weeks ago.
