Zoochat Challenge North America 2022

Also sorry I forgot to respond to your earlier post @NSU42. You can count anything you've seen since the start of the year, just as everyone else has.

Not looking to blow this whole thing up as a new comer, but I believe Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville, Texas has these as well. They were signed and I believe I saw them. However, it was too hard to make a positive ID as they were sitting quite a ways away across a lake. They are signed along the with Sandhill Crane.

I'm guessing it still doesn't change any results as their is likely something else @Kudu21 has already seen that would qualify. The European Herring Gull (Larus argentatus) also at Caldwell might. I haven't done quite enough research to say it's the only one, but from what I have done it appears most other holders of herring gull have smithsonianus. EDIT: After doing a bit more research, it seems their is some controversy around Larus argentatus and whether Larus smithsonianus is a subspecies or separate species. According to the IUCN, they appear to be separate species, but as possible speculation, Caldwell may have a smithsonianus and signed it as argentatus depending on who they go off of for it.

Here is an image of the sign at Gladys Porter for the cormorant:

Interesting development. With that information and nothing else, it does make Caldwell as a solo holder far more ambiguous at least.

I also think it's very likely @Kudu21 has seen another species that would count at this point; I'll leave it up to them to decide which one they'd like to substitute.

All interesting, but irrelevant as a) we follow IUCN taxonomy, and b) we follow whatever the zoo signage says.

Interesting! This must be a very recent development as it is not even reflected in ZIMS yet, and GPZ is pretty reliable on ZIMS. They are within the range of the species, so it would not surprise me if they received a rehab animal recently. Their grounds are also prime for water birds.

Not to worry though, I probably have at least a half dozen other species to fill that criterion with :P For myself, I wanted to have one mammal, one bird, and one herp for this challenge, so I would swap my DWA entry from the brown-throated three-toed sloth to the long-wattled umbrellabird (Cephalopterus penduliger) and then sub in the Sulawesi bear cuscus (Ailurops ursinus) from Memphis as my mammal species.

Figured, I was just reporting what I found. Based on signing and IUCN its a European Herring Gull. Might be one other collection that has it so I won't be putting it down yet.

Great! Wasn't sure with the deadline. The visit from earlier in the year will have to wait a bit as most those photos are on a hard drive at home, but I started putting together my list last night.

I would not be surprised if that is the case. Or it could even be they signed the wild birds because they are prevalent enough on the grounds as discussed towards the beginning of this thread. There is no mention of them being held at Gladys Porter on Zoochat from what I can tell, including on fairly recent species lists, so it might be brand new.

I'm glad it still worked out! I saw you had been to Memphis so figured the Bear Cuscus might show up.

16. European Mouflon Ovis orientalis musimon (@Coelacanth18 Are we counting this?)

Yes, but you should count it as 17 because the previous post you quoted has Mountain Goat as your 16th :p

Ecotherms:
Silk and Stinger (6/6) Completed 6/25/2022
Flat Rock Scorpion (Hadogenes troglodytes) - Maritime Aquarium (6/25/22)

Some error was made here. Between your Southwick's visit and your 4-zoo update from April 30, you upped your Silk and Stinger score from 4 to 5 without providing a fifth species... so either you missed an entry from that time or you are only at 5/6.

If European mouflon counts now, I have an addition from the Toronto Zoo.

Bovine Bonanza (9/20):

Sunset Zoo and Topeka Zoo (6/26)

Either one of you is a day off or this was a very unfortunate coincidence :p

Pretty in Pink
1. American flamingo, Phoenicopterus wagneri

2 of 4. You already had Chilean from earlier this year.

Interesting, I think Naples was advertised at being the only place to have them currently. Metro Richmond no longer lists the species in their online animal list and I'm not sure about Zootastic Park. Anyone want to offer some clarity? Either way, I'll look into switching out the species with something I know isn't in another place.

I'd switch out with another species. As long as there's any doubt that Naples isn't actually the only holder - and 2 places reported as having them recently qualifies - it doesn't really meet the benchmark required.

How ironic that @Coelacanth18 said that Sus scrofa don’t count towards the Three Little Pigs trial, and then you, with your username won the whole dang challenge! :p
Congrats, @SusScrofa! :D I may have lost this challenge, but I’ll try to get a “high score” of sorts before the year ends.
(PS: Platypus, Uakari, AND Ring-tailed Mongoose in half a year? I’m jealous!)
