Upcoming Exhibits in North American Zoos

Safari North Wildlife Park plans to open a new American Black Bear exhibit known as "Black Bear Falls" in 2022

Como Park Zoo & Conservatory has plans to open a new Sumatran Orangutan exhibit in the near future.

Big announcement out of Chicago tonight. Shedd Aquarium has unveiled a $500 million expansion and renovation with the biggest project being that the Islands, Lakes, and Rivers gallery is being replaced by a new Caribbean Coral Reef exhibit. The projected completion date is 2026 just ahead of the aquariums centennial.

This is a gut punch. It's hard not to read that (admittedly, heavy on rhetoric and light on details) and fear that Shedd's about to lose what makes it unique and charming.

Really regretting not having been able to visit in 2020 now. :(

Unless there are further unannounced plans for these areas, it appears the existing Great Lakes and Oceans galleries are being maintained, so not all of that simple charm is being removed. :)

Mmm. There *are* unannounced future plans, though. There's no detail on what stage 2 between 2026 and 2030 will be.

The disappointing thing is that they talk about maintaining the historic features of the aquarium but seem to interpret that narrowly as being about the building's architecture, not the exhibit galleries. It's a false distinction.

Given that Great Lakes and Oceans have both received major renovation in recent years while maintaining their simple charm, I doubt we'll see them go. My guess is that their next plan will probably involve a brand new expansion of their building, probably under Lake Michigan, like what their old Congo River complex plan involved. In fact they may just be resurrecting that plan for stage 2.

Zollman Zoo at Oxbow Park is working on a new Nature Center & Main Entrance that is supposed to open in the Fall of 2022

Seems really neat! Kinda confused why clouded leopards are being displayed if everything else is South American.
The dome is supposed to showcase rainforests all over the world. Architecture from South America, Africa, and Asia will be featured. Hopefully Africa and Asia get some representation with the herps and inverts that will be in this dome. But I guess South America has the most representation because the Amazon has some of the biggest biodiversity in the world.

Is the Alaskan exhibit* at Omaha Zoo still happening or did it finish with the opening of the new pinnipeds exhibit? Or what else was suppose to go into this exhibit area?

It has been confirmed that Sea Otters are coming, I imagine a few other animals probably will, too.
That’s cool, I didn’t see it on their master plan that they have on there site. Also since they were looking for a new director I didn’t know if things were put on hold till a new director was put in place.
