Brandywine Zoo Brandywine Zoo news

it isn't specified which exhibits are receiving renovations.
Those three exhibits are for Red Panda, Sandhill Crane, and Serval. Last time I was there, they also had the ravens and Snowy Egrets mixed with the crane, but I'm not sure if that's the case anymore. It's nice to see they're being renovated, though, since those exhibits have been there for decades and were originally built for big cats.

On June 17th, the zoo released the latest issue of "Zoo News" which announces a fundraising campaign called "Pudu Love" to raise $340,000 to build a new exhibit for their pudu, as well as their toucans and tortoises. The exhibit would include indoor winter housing with viewing windows, as well as a stream and small pool.

The zoo also announced they have moved into their new Animal Care Center, as well as stating that their eagles, condors, and chickens are off-exhibit due to avian influenza.

Interesting. I wonder where this is going to be since they were originally going to be mixed with the flamingos and sloth.

Also, I just came across a very long document about the master plan and it has some more species that I don't think have been revealed anywhere else.
  • Chinese Gorals and White-naped Cranes will be mixed with the Red Pandas in a future exhibit
  • Binturongs will be mixed/rotate with Siamangs
  • Giant Anteaters and Maned Wolves are also to be included in the future Capybara habitat
  • It is also planned to have spaces for North American Porcupine and Wolverine (!!!) near the future Canada Lynx exhibit.
  • Other animals that are being considered are Rock Hyrax, Meerkat, prairie dog, Japanese Macaque, peccary, and Arctic Fox

Goral, wolverine, and maned wolves?!?!? I really hope those all happen!! The closest wolverines are 8+ hours away, and only one of the three is a decent exhibit (Columbus, and it was closed on my visit).

The Delaware government’s website shared the sad news of Haechan the Southern Pudu’s passing :( Was cross posted by the LA Zoo’s social media, his home where he gained fame. The link posted is directly to the news article on the government’s website.

Brandywine Zoo’s Haechan the Pudu, Dies - State of Delaware News

oh my gosh, that's awful. I hope they're able to figure out what happened. That's a huge hit for the zoo, too, given his celebrity status :(

It’s really sad and you’re right, it’s a huge blow to the zoo :( I remember the little guy when I’d visit him at my home zoo, so damn cute and beloved by all. I think I have photos of him which I’ll try to post in the gallery.

They just started a big marketing campaign last week called "Pudu Love", to celebrate his pairing with Clover in an effort to raise money for their new exhibit. There's a sip and stroll type event this week that was going to unveil a bunch of Pudu Love merchandise :(

Oh no… :( I saw that they’re keeping a close eye on Clover just in case she has any symptoms. I pass on my love and hugs to the care staff at both facilities, I know he was much beloved by them and was an amazing ambassador for his specie.

Being a small zoo, getting donors is tough; the state funds a lot of it but in order to do the master plan, they need plenty of money from elsewhere, too, and his big name was going to help that. Hopefully they can find another male for her quickly, and maybe give that one a Kpop name in his honor. I hope it's something that can't be passed to Clover.

Yeah that’s the sad part as well, not having massive recognition like San Diego or Bronx would certainly mean having trouble with finding funds :( that would be an awesome idea to honor Haechan and fund the zoo’s master plan as well.

I visited on Wednesday. All birds are back on exhibit, except I did not see the Bald Eagles. Sandy the Sandhill Crane was in the raven/eagle/egret aviary (I think this was mentioned before?)

Has anyone heard anything about Haechan’s cause of death yet?
