All the Binturong (Arctictis binturong) currently in Australia came from Singapore Zoo, or are descended from Singapore imports, except for the Hamerton imports. (In 2019 Hamerton Zoo exported 2 of their generic binturong to make room for pure Javan binturong.) The only breeding pair in the country are at Perth Zoo. Rabu and Selasa have produced 2 litters. (1.1 in 2017 and 1.1 in 2019.) There are no binturong in New Zealand.

Brothers Rimbo and Kemiri have been transferred to Taronga from Perth.

(Kemiri was originally reported as female, so I will post an updated version of the population list once Selasa gives birth to her latest litter and I can add those too.)

Whatever happened to the binturongs at Taronga?

The binturong population remains unchanged from 2021, but I am reposting the list for ease of reference as there are a couple of small changes/corrections. Rimbo and Kemiri were transferred from Perth to Taronga. In August last year Perth Zoo announced that Selasa was was pregnant, but they have now confirmed that she did not give birth. The only other 'news' comes from hints on social media that Baru and Daisy at Mogo are being introduced for breeding purposes. Hopefully it will be successful, it would be nice to see Emas and Pepper's line continue in the region.

It’d be great if Mogo Zoo were successful in breeding their pair as half the current population is comprised of a single line (Rabu and Selasa) and six of the eight holders have non breeding animals.

Given the average lifespan is 10-15 years, a number of zoos will be looking to acquire new individuals within the next five years. Hopefully some facilities will take the initiate to import - adding new bloodlines to the region.

I was at Mogo last week (see my report on the Mogo thread) and the two binturong were absolutely into one another! They were in separate enclosures but seemed very interested in each other. I've never seen binturong so active in any zoo before. We were there for 3 consecutive days and they were very active on all three days. I'm pleased to read that this is a possible breeding pair. :)

As reported by @Steve Robinson “DDZ has imported two pairs of pure Javan sub-species Binturong. A first for Australia. They have now finished their post-arrival quarantine and will shortly go on display - one pair here and the other at Tasmania Zoo. We are very grateful to our good friends at Hamerton Zoo Park for this opportunity.”

That has certainly given the regional population a nice boost can the above list be updated?

The male at Tasmania Zoo is named Asher as mentioned in their socials.

Should the imported pair at the DDZ be added to the regional population list?

Should the imported pair at the DDZ be added to the regional population list?

Definitely. This will happen in the January updates the thread authors will make. When the pair at Darling Downs Zoo and Tasmania Zoo are added, they’ll be a notation they’re of the Javan subspecies - but they’ll still be a part of the general Binturong population list.

The big binturong news in 2022 was the import of 4 (2.2) pure Javan subspecies animals by Darling Downs Zoo from Hamerton Zoo, UK. (Javan animals marked in italics.) DDZ have retained a pair, and a second pair went to Tasmania Zoo. This increases the number of holders in the region to 10.

@Abbey will now be taking over this list to complete the yearly updates. Everyone please feel free to post binturong related news here to help her out. Thanks very much, Abbey!

Melbourne Zoo - Binturong details:

Their DOB’s are as follows:

1.0 Bhalu (20/10/2013)
1.0 Tugu (07/07/2014)

Note: It’s Bhalu (not Bahlu). Bhalu means “bear” in Indonesian; while Tugu is a place in Jakarta.
Bhalu's therefore a full sibling to Selasa at Perth meaning he is related to quite a portion of the regional population via Selasa.

It does seem more and more likely these males are simply going to be non breeding individuals imo.
