Some exciting news coming from the zoo.

First up is we have dwarf mongooses (0.3) back; Dorothy, Rose, Blanche.

Next up is that the zoo is bringing a virtual reality experience to the Otto Borchert Faimly special exhibit space. The focus is going to be on following a gorilla troop in the jungle. Suppose to be a 360 degree experience. Opening sometime this month.

Lastly, it seems that the zoo director is listening once again to the zoo staff and modifying the master plan, and creating a new strategic plan for the zoo. He along with all parties involved are re-evaluating habitats and updating and filling them. He wants the zoo to be something that Milwaukee is proud of. Great to hear things are at work behind the scenes.

Happy that mongoose is back. I have a good feeling for the future zoo projects.
 
A couple random updates on the zoo…
Former prairie dog exhibit has railing torn down and is being dug up. Possible new addition coming soon?
Sad to see the mandrill exhibit empty since it was my favorite as a child but looks like it is being redone with tree branches for a smaller primate species. The old Diana/debrazza/cotton top exhibit looks like some remodeling done and I’m not sure if a new species will move in or just possible upgrades. Lastly the animal hospital has “ (0.3) Scrimitar Horned Oryx currently in quarantine along with a boa constrictor.
Does anyone know what the (0.3) means before listing animals in quarantine? I have seen it often but never knew what it meant?

Usually those numbers like 0.3 mean three females

I wonder if this has something to do with the electric lines that run under the exhibit to keep the prairie dogs from digging out and escaping. They could be repairing/replacing it and the prairie dogs might return?

Private sources say that the zoo wanted to get Prevost's Squirrels. I wonder if they could be added to the building? Or possibly the Small Mammals Building?

I'd guess that if the zoo was to get Prevost's squirrels they'd go in the Small Mammal building. But the Primates of the World building does feel very empty now with mandrills gone so who knows. I did actually see a cotton-top tamarin in the forested Goeldi exhibit during my last visit, so they have been introduced to the exhibit. If Prevost's squirrels were to go to Primates, they would live in the former tamarin exhibit.

Are the Goeldi's still in there, or did the tamarins replace them?
 
Although I feel like the way the article was written and the very end of the article purposing that the zoo may have to close, is more for entertainment and clicks, the information is kinda startling. The zoo is facing a deficit of over $900k and attendance in down more then 50k. There’s still a lot of events coming up such as zoo a la carte, boo at the zoo, holiday lights just name a few.

The zoo is also pointing to covid and the restrictions that are causing issues with large events for attendance and finances. I would also chime in and add that the bird flu and having birds off exhibit probably had part of hampering attendance growth, as well as other things. It’s still a year coming out from the pandemic but it’s sad to hear theses kinda of things. I wonder how this will affect upcoming projects and goals the zoo is wanting to achieve.

I bet heavy Covid numbers in the Milwaukee area is limiting people coming in from outside the area, thus lowering attendance numbers. I wouldn't be surprised to see attendance go back up significantly if the Covid numbers in Milwaukee dip down before the end of the summer
