Brookfield Zoo Brookfield Zoo News 2022

I’d like to add that around 10:00-10:30 is also a good time to see the pangolin as he/she was very active when I stopped by at that time a couple weeks ago.

While the ABC collection has tanked hard in recent years, the non-ABC collection has improved more than I give it credit for. The zoo has brought in a ton of neat rarities within these last few years. The pangolins are the most notable obviously, but Chinese giant salamander, Texas blind salamander, Kemp's Ridley sea turtle, small-spotted genet, etc, all are fantastic additions as well.
This point is very interesting, and something I've certainly noticed. Brookfield appears to be doing the one thing us Zoochatters/ Zoo enthusiasts clamor for the most: bring in rare and interesting species, rather than replace them with ABCs. In fact, it seems as if Brookfield even goes in the opposite direction, with clear care and attention to certain rarities while phasing out the larger animals. Who knows if this will pan out to be a successful strategy, but with the increasing homogenization of the zoo landscape in North America, it is a welcome change of pace to say the least.

Now add back the callitrichids (Renovations are a good opportunity) and I'll be happy... They were definitely missed on my last visit.

From the zoo's facebook page:

DEVELOPING: Late this afternoon, Brookfield Zoo received notice of a potential threat at the zoo. The zoo is now closed however many zoogoers are still sheltering in place on site. @Brookfield Police Department is working with Brookfield Zoo Police to actively investigate the situation throughout the park and surrounding area. Out of an abundance of caution, we ask that guests on site remain sheltered in place until law enforcement provides the all clear.

From WGN:
BROOKFIELD, Ill. — A threatening call at Brookfield Zoo caused the premises to lock down on Tuesday evening.

In a press conference, Brookfield Zoo police said a female called a crisis intervention line at around 5:15 p.m. and “threatened to do harm to herself and others at the zoo.”

As a result of the call, police locked down the zoo and a shelter-in-place order for guests was given. Over 50 officers from various jurisdictions responded and a “methodical” sweep of the zoo was conducted.

The caller was not found and all zoogoers were safely escorted out by 8:10 p.m. after they were forced to shelter-in-place, police said.

This was already stated on the previous page :).

Yes, and I was just discussing this on the top of this page too lol.

There doesn’t seem to have been a Pygmy hippo by that name at another AZA facility, so this individual probably came from Rum Creek. They have roughly 80 hippos and the zoo also received their tapirs from that facility a few years back.

Correct that the hippo’s name is Banana and she is female. I was told she came from ZooTampa.

Banana arrived in May from the Center for Conservation of Tropical Ungulates (CCTU) in Punta Gorda, Florida at the end of May and moved to the zoo’s pachyderm building at the beginning of June.

Headed to Brookfield for the first time since 1998. Planning on going Thursday. Any can't miss animals or exhibits that I may not be aware of?

Anything particular you are hoping to see?

The pangolin is obviously the biggest rarity. They are located in the middle of the African Forest house in a nocturnal enclosure. As has been discussed in the above posts, for the best chance of seeing it awake and active head to the building around 10 AM or 3 PM when they are fed.
