San Diego Zoo San Diego Zoo news 2022

Absolutely phenomenal news! Seeing this species becoming more prevalent in American collections is great to see. Hopefully the zoo will exhibit the species, although I imagine it will likely be used as an ambassador animal.
That was my thought or on display somewhere in the explorers basecamp.

I have received word from a friend that a pair of (1.1) Golden Lion Tamarins were added to Parker Aviary a few weeks back. The zoo previously had this species in the aviary but they were removed a few years ago so it’s exciting to have them back.

Also, male siamang, Unkie, passed away a few weeks ago unfortunately. This leaves the zoo with 0.2 siamangs, his mate Eloise and their daughter Sela. Very sad to lose both Satu (the male orang) and Unkie within months of each other.

Four Wattled Jacana chicks hatched in the hummingbird aviary this week. I was told that these are the first of their species to have hatched in the United States. The male is solely responsible for incubating the eggs and rearing the chicks, which are tiny and adorable, and he is proving to be doing a great job from what I have observed!

Kaja, the male orangutan born to Indah on 1/4/2022 was on exhibit for the first time this morning. After a difficult birth, Indah was unable to care for him. The keepers have been working hard to get Mother and son to bond. This morning was a triumph!

The zoo's most recent map has the hippo exhibit listed as under construction. Any idea what's going on here?

I’m going to guess that means it’s under construction? My question is why is the map so unnecessarily blurry?

If it’s under construction does that mean Funani and Amhale have been moved elsewhere? I’d assume it would just be minor construction on the pool, the filtration ect.

The Nile hippopotamus and okapi habitats are both, indeed, closed for renovations. The hippos have moved to Urban Jungle and the okapi have moved to the Safari Park until the renovations are complete.

Whereabouts in the Urban Jungle? Are they on display?

What about the Black Duikers with the okapis? Major/minor renovations?
