San Diego Zoo San Diego Zoo news 2022

@IndianRhino I believe that you are right about the hippos being in the rhino exhibit. I am actually very shocked about the hippos being in the rhino yard.
I mean, considering the fact that it had elephants for the longest time pre-Elephant Odyssey (hence the large pool) and the fact that Milwaukee kept their hippos temporarily in *their* old elephant quarters...

I think it’ll be fine as it’s only temporary. Hippos aren’t predominantly water animals, and actually spend a lot of time on land, grazing, eating and sleeping. The pool anyhow is rather large and big enough for them, it’s not some small little pool.

From my understanding, the renovations aren’t going to be anything revolutionary, mostly just maintenance, upkeep, and some freshening up. Just enough to make it necessary to move the animals versus just keeping them locked in. The black duiker were not mentioned, but the zoo will have a lot more options as to where to move the duiker on-site versus the okapi, but I don’t know for sure.

I talked to someone today at the rhino exhibit. She said the hippos are still in their bedrooms at the hippo exhibit but are expected to be moved to the rhino exhibit in Urban Jungle within the next couple of weeks. She said they are excited to have the hippos on exhibit. Also, a volunteer told me the renovations should be completed in 6 months.

Four wattled jacana chicks have hatched. This is the first time this species has bred at the zoo. They are currently on exhibit in the Hummingbird Aviary.

Four Wattled Jacana chicks hatched in the hummingbird aviary this week. I was told that these are the first of their species to have hatched in the United States. The male is solely responsible for incubating the eggs and rearing the chicks, which are tiny and adorable, and he is proving to be doing a great job from what I have observed!

There's pictures in the gallery as well. ;)

Just finished a visit at the Zoo (7/23/22) that lasted 9 hours (I finished the entire zoo in one day!) and I noticed a few things that have changed and I don’t think were mentioned on this thread yet.

- The marsh aviary at Northern Frontier is closed due to the avian flu being detected in northern California. The waterfowl pools in front of the entrance have also been drained, and its inhabitants have been moved inside the aviary. The reason why the Zoo only closed this particular aviary, and not the other numerous walk-through aviaries throughout the whole park is a mystery, but a relief nonetheless.

- The Hummingbird Habitat has at least two unsigned Crested Quail-Doves.

- The Spotted-Necked Otter exhibit near the bear enclosures is being renovated. The water is drained and all of the animals are off display.

-I forgot exactly what terrarium it was, but in the reptile house, there was an unsigned Black-Breasted Leaf Turtle.

- The Northern Caiman Lizards have been moved to the Cool Critters building. Their exhibit in the reptile house has an “Off-Exhibit” sign.

- I don’t know how long it’s been there, but there is at least one Slender-Horned Gazelle sharing an exhibit with the Grevy’s Zebras where the Eastern Giant Eland used to be.

Made in impromptu visit to the zoo this week, all thanks to my brother wanting to see RHCP at Petco Park :D minor updates I’ve noticed since my last visit:
  • Lake Titicaca Frogs have replaced one of exhibits that was home to an Emperor Newt in the 1st level of Cool Critters.
  • Butterflies are now present in the greenhouse section of Spineless Marvels, predominantly filled with Blue Morpho.
  • It appears that the coconut crab exhibit inside the greenhouse is being occupied already, did see food items inside the exhibit indicating the crab may have been moved from Tiger River.
  • Bontebok fawn is on exhibit with family in Northern Frontier.
  • Was told by a keeper that the Golden Lion Tamarins in Parker aviary have mated about 2 weeks ago and staff is hopeful for a pregnancy.
