Mountain Tapir, Platypus, Monk Seal.....

Having been a zoochatter for nearly 15 years and visited well over a hundred zoological facilities in the U.S. alone, this will sound like a repeat of many "rarest species threads" but I really would like some help.
I'm planning a trip to Japan next year that will increase my species seen/lifers list but before I go, I'd like to knock off most of the U.S. captive species that I haven't.
Since I'll be going to land of the rising sun, California (which has the majority of the species I'm seeking) will most likely be included on my way to Japan. The species listed below are left on my U.S. list:
Mountain Tapir (the number one species I need to see)
Platypus
Hawaiian Monk Seal
CA Condor
Uganda kob
Barbary Deer
Calamine Deer
Desert Bighorn
Hoolock Gibbon
Emperor Penguin
Lake titicaca frogs

What I'm asking is suggestion for species I may potentially have missed worth making a trip for. Any suggestions I'll appreciate and you can DM me as well so the thread doesn't get clogged up. Thank you in advance fellow Chatters!

Have you been to the San Diego trifecta before? Or much of California? Might help with suggestions knowing that information.

No I haven't. LA, the San Diegos (though kind of surprisingly reading a recent species list from the zoo, there's not anything I haven't seen before) and CA in general I haven't. The west coast, NM, CO, AZ and the upper midwest (IL, WI and the Dakotas (Reptile gatdens) I have not visited. I know this is tricky for the fact I have seen majority of species exhibited in the U.S.
To make this a bit easier:
Are Chinese water deer publicly displayed anymore?
Is Brookfield the only public display of Pangolin?
As of now the only herp I'm seeking are the titicaca frogs, the others I'll see in the are wild or Japan
Rare hoofstock I'm always seeking as well as bird of prey and bird of paradise
Primates as well, though Hoolock seem to be the only standout after searching
Carnivores, seen all the bears, pretty much all the Felids and Canids, but any suggestions are welcome

And World of Birdd is on my list (Wedge Tails and Long Crested)

No, and I haven't heard of any privately either.

Well you've got Black Duiker at SDZ and LA, I think the last Giant Eland is gone from SDZ. Probably not much you haven't seen from the sounds of it.
SDZ has Harpy and Crowned Eagles, also Ornate Hawk-eagle.
Raggiana, Magnificent, and Superb birds-of-paradise all on display too.

St. Vincent Amazon and Socorro Dove I don't think made the recent San Diego species list, came in after that, and Malagasy Pond Heron is a notable arrival. Also what about the African Darter?

You list Emperor Penguin, what about Pilot Whale and Ringed Seal also at SeaWorld SD?

If aquariums are of interest Monterey Bay Aquarium could be worth a visit for cephalopods, the new deep sea exhibit, and the Laysan Albatross. (Noting that the latter is brought out as a program bird)
Also tuna and Sunfish but those are prevalent in Japanese aquariums.

Is Brookfield the only public display of Pangolin?
Yes, for White-bellied pangolin, in North America at least. Chinese is held at two European zoos and more are held in Asian countries the species are native to.

As of now the only herp I'm seeking are the titicaca frogs, the others I'll see in the are wild or Japan
You haven't seen them around? They have become increasingly common, and if you've really seen 'most of the captive US species' then you probably should have seen them by now. You are probably not including fish then, as you seem to be missing Shedd and Monterey Bay Aquariums, holders of many fish and other invert species.

@Great Argus very much appreciated
Superbs, Maginificants, African darters and Socorro I have not seen or don't recall. Monterey is also part of my Cali vist for the reasons you listed.
I have seen (or some cases interacted with the others) but again appreciate it

@ChunkyMunky titicacas became more prevalent during my time working for zoological facilities which didn't allow for vacations and since I'm in FL the closest one I could find was Ft worth or Cincinnati, if you know some where closer I would like to know
Regarding fish: only the big stuff, went out of my way to see the tiger sharks at Camden and Bulls in OK. Also when Toledo used to have Tigerfish, 3 lung fish species and the only mimic octopus on display at the time

You're welcome. The African Darter is the last in captivity so definitely worth looking for, it's in Scripps Aviary. Socorro Dove is in the Arctic aviary next to Polar Bear Plunge.

Ah, that makes sense. They really have started to take off just recently. If you are planning to go to Brookfield for the Pangolin, they also have the frogs in the Reptiles and Birds building. Otherwise, Zoo Knoxville is the closest to Florida, they recently acquired them and should have them on display in the ARC. Crazy little frogs, I wish you luck in getting the delight of viewing them.

San Diego has them now as well, so hypothetically easy to get on this California trip.

@Great Argus, California apparently will round out the majority of my lifers, any other species will also be welcomed

Side note: pangolins should have already been crossed off my list considering a facility I worked for had them. However a beef between the head vet and I only allowed me to identify the subspecies of ocelot they had ( generic) and do some basic training with their Pygmy hippo. She would not let me see the pangolin for whatever b.s. reason she gave me. I digress lol

There are Emperor Penguins in Japan too, if you don't want to pay the US Sea World price (and depending what part of Japan you are going to, of course).

There are several facilities I plan on visiting in Japan that currently have Emporers but I do want to visit the SD trifecta regardless.

Mountain Tapir - only at LA and Cheyenne Mountain.

Platypus - only at SDZSP

Hawaiian Monk Seal - only at Minnesota at possibly a collection or two in Hawaii

Ugandan Kob - only at SDZSP

Barbary Deer - only at SDZSP

Calamine Deer - only at LA and Phoenix

Desert Bighorn - kept at 8 different collections - ASDS, CALM, Hemker, Living Desert (CA), LA, Phoenix, SDZSP, and Southland Safari.

Hooloch Gibbon - only at Gibbon Conservation Center

Emperor Penguin - only at SeaWorld San Diego

Lake Titicaca Frog - lots of collections have this species now - Brookfield, Dallas, Fort Worth, Saint Louis, Atlanta, Oklahoma City, Omaha, Denver, Detroit, Columbus, Cincinnati, Turtle Back, Knoxville, and possibly others.

I was hoping Atlanta had them, have a planned trip that way in early October. What I'm asking is species I haven't named, the list I made is the remnants of species I haven't seen in the U.S. Captive only, I have several oceanic(mainly) and other non captive trips as well.

It's a little hard to think of species without knowing what you've seen. Margay, rusty-spotted cat, leopard cat, jaguarundi, jungle cat? Pale fox, island fox, raccoon dog? Any skunks other than striped? Greater grison, ermine, american marten, african clawless otter? Steller sea lion, spotted seal, harp seal, ringed seal, elephant seal? White-lipped deer, persian fallow, black wildebeest?

And to clarify, you are mainly interested in mammals?

@TinoPup you nailed it, Pale fox, Tanuki (though plentiful in Japan), island fox, grison (that's definitely a big one) I have not seen. The rest I have.

@ChunkyMunky pengopus not limited to mammals, inverts (specifically insects) I'm not as interested in.

Isn't there a place in Texas that has crab eating raccoons?
