National Zoo and Aquarium National Zoo and Aquarium Review (January 2022)

Great review - and some nice photos too!

I love the idea of the guinea pigs in with the tamarins! I love that sort of thing (colour matching etc).

I went in January and they weren't sharing the enclosure then, so it must be a new thing.
Thanks :)

Yeah, I really like it when animals are exhibited in an interesting/different way. And mixed exhibits are always fun.

Great review and great photos @akasha.

Some of the enclosures look amazing, and they seem to have quite a wonderful collection.

I'd love to visit soon, as it seems quite well worth a trip up to ACT!
Thanks :) Yes, it’s a beautiful zoo and well worth a visit. If you do go to the ACT, the reptile zoo is worth a visit too. I also love Jerrabomberra Wetlands and Namadgi National Park/Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve. Lots of easily accessible wildlife to see!

Yep, if I do end up going (which i'd really love to), i'll definitely make the most of my visit by visiting the other parks as well!

I do have to say, the National Zoo is quite underrated amongst us zoochatters. A collection much more impressive than some of our city zoos.

The National Zoo has always had a diverse range of species and point of difference. Notable examples being the Sri Lankan leopards and Tigons. They're also one of a dwindling number of sun bear holders. Though it appears these will be phased out in the future.

If you go to Namadgi, do the Yankee Hat walk. So many macropods! I’ve seen a lot of wild Eastern Grey Kangaroos, but never in those numbers, or exhibiting so many behaviours, they are magic to watch there :)

And I agree about the National Zoo, with the open range expansion, it’s up there with the best zoos in the country, certainly in terms of visitor experience, and the collection as well.

Namadgi will be a must see too. From photos it appears to be incredibly beautiful! That sounds really exciting regarding the eastern greys; i've never seen more than ten or so in the wild before.

From going over species lists; the National Zoo seems to have one of the most diverse exotic collections i've seen in the whole country.
