Australia Zoo Australia Zoo News 2022

I feel bad for the poor zookeepers who have to actually say that name every day.

Even from a training and husbandry perspective, animals learn two syllable names best, so it's not just a terrible name, it's an impractical name.

I'll mention this as a moot point as names aren't commonly used in this species as per recall, but the point still stands

I believe you may find regardless of what or how animals learn best its all about "celebrity"
Its more than likely the keepers will call it another name. ;)

Agreed. They've clearly identified Paris Hilton as a progressive alliance to the zoo. I'm not entirely sure what she'll bring to the table, but assume publicity will be the main benefit. Her followers on social media presumably like her name choices for her dogs etc. and may well be suitably enamoured with this giraffe.

Perhaps Australia Zoo want the next "Fiona the Hippo."

I very much agree, they clearly do so in an attempt to showcase the zoo as family-owned. I guess I could have made it clearer in my original post, but that behaviour is partially why I say it operates more similarly to a 'regional/roadside' zoo than a 'destination' zoo. At a certain point, one at which Australia Zoo has outgrown, the popularity of a facility, and the amount of 'callbacks' it holds, makes these things seem tacky and disrespectful rather than respectful and wholesome.

I think Wildlife HQ has many great examples as to how to properly honor those who have aided/constructed the zoo as well, without it being tacky or disrespectful. I'll always bring up the prime example of it's Reptile Barn, in which they just have a nice wall dedicating it to Bob Irwin as a result of the great work he has done for native reptiles. To be fair, that is for a smaller budget facility, and if it were to be larger or more 'expensive', some people would likely end up seeing that as more of an oversight/waste of space than a respectful homage, but I'd view those people as incorrect nonetheless.

To directly compare that to Australia Zoo, their reptile building is now called "Robert's Reptile House", which is directly next to "Grace's Bird Garden", of which is just a short walk from "Bindi's Island", that you get to by walking a bit further past the (now unoperational) "Bindi's Pony Trails", which in itself is found by taking a right at the statue of the Irwin family after entering the zoo you've found by following the 5+ road signs of Steve Irwin, going past 2 alligator enclosures adorned with further signs of Steve Irwin, past "Crikey Cafe", the wall designated for that one time Bindi Irwin was on Dancing with the Stars, that one time Robert Irwin was on a talk show, the 'Crocodile Hunter's Story' wall, the multiple walls with newspaper clippings about the Irwins, the 'Robert Irwin Photography' store, the multiple retail stores with more Irwin-decorated merchandising than you could ever imagine... I don't think I need to go on further.
I believe you may of left out "Bindis Boot camp" which was just left of the African plains exhibit.
I am somewhat surprised considering the amount of overseas visitors that go there they have not a native nocturnal house show casing many of the less seen and endangered native species since they appear to talk a lot about conservation and helping Australian wildlife?. One would believe perhaps even a pair of Tree Kangaroos,Quolls and Platypus would be showcased for not just the local visitors but for the many overseas people who visit.

Whether one likes her or not she is a celebrity and has some fame also with some possible status to some!

I agree. There's certai no harm in expanding their investment portfolio. Even gimmicks like the cryptocurrency may pass (pun intended) could generate money for the zoo and if that in turn supports their conservation work, then that can only be a good thing.

It'd be nice to see a flow on effect of that to upgrading the zoo, but perhaps that will come in time.

Paris has 19.7 million followers on Instagram...the amount of advertising the Australia Zoo will be getting from this is insane.

Hopefully this will pan out for the zoo in having some progress with future zoological exhibits ;)

I don't know if the extent of her involvement will be generating publicity via social media etc. but it may open the door for her to sponsor exhibits etc.

She clearly has a love of canids, so perhaps they could entice her into sponsoring an African wild dog exhibit. The dogs would be named horrendous names Princess Painted Dog Baby and the such like, but it would diversify the collection.

I personally think her involvement has generated a lot of publicity for Australia Zoo. As I think i've already stated in this thread; I saw a massive billboard of this whole campaign in Melbourne's CBD recently. I'd imagine at least some of her 19.7 million followers will consider Australia Zoo as a must see now.

I'm surprised Australia haven't gone for Lions though. They've done so well with tigers, and Lions will surely compliment their current African collection.

I Believe they need an exhibit for the cheetah first since they have never been on show for the public other than the walk on the lead if one is lucky enough to be there at the right time.

Australia Zoo need to make a decision on whether they want to be a breeding facility for Cheetah or not. They’ve previously acquired males and females, but they’re never going to breed all the time they’re housed in such close proximity to an apex predator (tigers). Assuming they don’t want to construct dedicated facilities to housing multiple males and females, it’s better they focus on housing a small number of bachelor males - ideally handraised, so they can interact with guests.

African lion would be a big drawcard for the zoo. If the do go into this species, I would hope they consider building a large exhibit capable of holding a breeding pride. The Lincoln Park Zoo are an example of a spectacular lion exhibit, with architecture combined with world class husbandry facilities. It would require a significant outlay (on a pair with any of the four main projects of the early 2000’s), but it’s exactly what the zoo needs imo.

I'm one person who won't be hooked by any of this. I'm not really sure who Paris Hilton is anyway..:D. Yuk what twaddle, world's gone mad...;)
