Bachelor holdings are *sorely* needed in zoos, especially if the end goal is to create a sustainable population. Europe's got loads of bachelor holders, and credit's due where breeding is concerned Europewise.I mean, I would not be surprised if Miami decided to go with 1 or the other.
Unless one of the 2 species will be represented by a bachelor herd, there's no way in hell that Miami will have the resources for large herds of both elephant species
Don’t know for sure re. Sundara as haven’t seen any pictures of her that show much mammary development. Shes always been a wide cow so I couldn’t say for sure that she’s pregnant just based on that.
Not sure what to say about Fresno’s elephants - that would suck if it’s the truth. Their trio is very genetically valuable and I’ve been hoping that the cows are pregnant for a while now. But then again, zoos often lie and cover up these things in the earlier stages so there’s a perfectly good chance your family member was just lied to and one or both of the cows are in the earlier stages of pregnancy.
In that case, I'm sure they have a way of deciding which of the 2 species will be held as a bachelor herd at the zoo.Bachelor holdings are *sorely* needed in zoos, especially if the end goal is to create a sustainable population. Yes. I got my information directly from the elephant manager. I have known her personally before she became the manager there actually. So the relationship is established. The facility can still easily be used for Indian Rhinos.
I'm assuming if ZCChip got this info from a manager, then it's highly credible. Even as a manager she should have some understanding of the upper managements decisions, so if she didn't mention elephants returning, I don't think it's likely they will.
I believe another zoo owns Ongard. Correct me if I am wrong.
I do believe St Louis will be phasing out of elephants if they do not change bulls by nature not by choice. Their program is messy. They are keeping non breeding cows while keeping the bull’s daughters and the bull is only breeding one cow. If they are still breeding.
San Diego owns Ongard.
Thanks. I wonder if that means they are planning on adding Asians too.
Miami doesn’t have a breeding herd. They have Dahlip and an old cow.As far as i'm aware, San Diego plans to hold a bachelor group of Africans in the future, so will be moving away from holding geriatric Asians.
San Diego sent Ongard to Miami for breeding. Being a valuable founder to the region, I don't think they'd send him there unless they were confident he'd be used for breeding there in the future.

Yes, but the initial plan was for a breeding herd to be formed following their deaths with Ongard as the breeding bull.
thanks. It will be interesting on how they will get appropriate cows then.
In the meantime, it’d be nice to hear of Ongard contributing to the North American breeding programme via AI. This was mentioned when he was imported, but despite regular speculation on here he could be the sire of various pregnancies, we’ve never had confirmation of him siring any calves.
Ongard will be 12 years old this year and has been in the region for four years, so it’d be nice to see use being made of this valuable bull.
Elephants Have Sex In Front of Guests, Children at Animal Kingdom - Inside the Magic
I don’t know if this is entirely accurate but I guess Disney Animal Kingdom elephants have been breeding?
By the looks of it the elephants mating are Luna, and Jabali with Vasha in the backgroundWe don't know when this footage is from, but there's a chance this could be credible information. Dosen't necessarily confirm a pregnancy, but can confirm they possibly are at least mating.
Nice to see the elephants are breeding. I suspect Kianga may already be pregnant since there was an episode in Magic of Disney's Animal Kingdom showing "romance" (not actual breeding however) between Maclean and Kianga. Not too sure who the animals in these pictures are but hopefully the cow is Nadirah as she needs to get breeding ASAP. The bull looks on the smaller side so I'm assuming it's either Tsavo or Jabali but again, not too sure. Either way, I really hope DAK finally has some more success breeding after nearly 6 years without a calf. They have 5 breeding aged cows and multiple breeding bulls (2 are unproven though) so it's confusing and disappointing why breeding has been so slow here.Elephants Have Sex In Front of Guests, Children at Animal Kingdom - Inside the Magic

If so and if this breeding results in a successful pregnancy and birth, that'd be fantastic news as Jabali is a quite valuable bull. His father, Ali, was wildborn and has only one other offspring, Zahara at Indianapolis. And his mother, Vasha, was also wildborn and also only has one other offspring, the aforementioned Kianga.I think the bull in the video looks to be Jabali (but correct me if i'm wrong).
