Chester Zoo Chester Zoo News 2022

I took a quick look at Zoo Tierliste and found some arrivals during 2022.

Red Spitting Cobra (Naja pallida) from London Zoo (unknown number)
Ethiopian Mountain Viper (Bitis parvicola) 3.1 from London Zoo
Verreaux's Eagle Owl (Bubo lacteus) 0.1 from Twycross

Neither of the snakes has been exhibited at Chester before.

Re: Grasslands
Where was this announced?

(Just curious.)

So Summer '24 as an opening date?

I can't remember, it could have been at the AGM.

Apologies if previously posted, but Kayjo, a 5yo male Tree Kangaroo is now on show in the islands exhibit, after the previous female, I think called Sangria? has recently passed away.

The Dusky Pademelon sharing the same exhibit, has a joey in the pouch.

Yes the original Tree Kangaroo is/was Sangria... very sad if she's passed away, she was an absolutely beautiful animal, although I think she was a decent age when she arrived at Chester?

Are the mother and daughter pair still there?
Edit: just confirmed to myself- Kirana and Kasarna are the pair I am talking about.

Kasarna is still there and will eventually be introduced to the newly arrived male Dash I believe. Mother Kirana was moved back in January to breeding retirement at Big Cat Sanctuary. Personally(and this is just my opinion) I would like to see Kasarna be swapped with another female from outside of Europe potentially just because of her representation. Mum Kirana is well represented by siblings and cubs, dad Fabi could have been genetically important though

Already mixed and in together .

They haven't been introduced yet.

Then how was he sharing the exhibit with her on Tuesday and the volunteer talking about them pointed out one as Dash and the other as the female. Both were around the pool area for most of the afternoon, before she went and sat by the bushes along the fence and the he was happily sat outside the window by the bit they walk over to get to the other side.
On Tuesday they were out together and anyone at Chester would have seen them sharing the same space and at the same time, so they most definitely have been introduced to each other.

That's interesting; although it contradicts multiple articles from yesterday which implied they haven't been introduced yet. Albeit, media can be wrong at times.

I'll take your word for it though as you've obviously seen them multiple times out on display together. It's good to hear they're doing well together so far, fingers crossed for future success breeding wise.

Reading between the lines, I’d assume Dash arrived anything up to a month ago and Chester Zoo wanted to successfully integrate them before announcing his arrival and breeding plans.

As we’ve seen at other zoos, introductions of this species carry a significant degree of risk and while they can be successfully achieved within a month, there’s no guarantees.

With a successful introduction accomplished, I hope they continue to enjoy each other’s company and prove to be a successful breeding pair.

So orla is the mother again hopefully millie and kanzi will get the chance to breed in the future as they are both 9 years old and with orlas new babies this makes her a mother for the 6th time now

A few small updates on things I noticed yesterday - apologies if any have been noted here already.
  • Relatively large building under construction on the west side of Miniature Monkeys, on the corner nearest to the exit of Islands. Presumably to house tamandua?
  • Construction going on in the outdoor enclosure on the east side of the Cattle House, which most recently held Anoa but is now vacant.
  • A couple of updates in Tropical Realm - Golden Mantella are now mixed with Gold Dust Day Gecko (Pheisuma laticauda) and Whitebelly Reed Frog (Heterixalus alboguttatus). The neighbouring vivarium holds Malagasy Giant Day Gecko (Pheisuma grandis). I couldn’t remember if these were new or not…
  • New giraffe calf visible - I think there’ll be another one fairly soon.
