Zoochat Challenge North America 2022

@birdsandbats Still a valid question though, I've been asking myself the same thing :p of the 14 zoos I've visited, 3 excluded penguins based on geographic/biome themes, 4 were very small, and 2 had the same species of penguin. Smithsonian, Abilene, SDZSP, and LA are 4 larger zoos I've visited this year and all of them happen to not have penguins.

I know I can pick up Magellanic and Little Blue from nearby aquariums, and I'm hoping to do so. Subantarctics will require a visit to SeaWorld though, and I hadn't been planning on a visit there.

Finally decided to get around to joining the challenge. I now realize that I should've just updated after each visit:eek:. Going zoo by zoo would be too long and confusing so I just did one update for all my visits, and added which zoo the species was first seen at.

I really, really hate to be that guy, but there's two errors with this:
  1. You're actually at 6/9 for Cat Got Your Tongue. Only one of either Cougar/Bobcat count. The requirements for Cat Got Your Tongue are all 6 Pantherinae, an African cat, an American cat, and a Eurasian cat. Cougar and Bobcat are both American.
  2. Domestics don't count, no matter how "exotic" they are (@Coelacanth18 told me). Unless Toronto holds Wild Yak (and they definitely don't), then you should be at 11/20 for Bovine Bonanza.
Otherwise, welcome to the challenge!

I doubt you'll get a bonus point, but I think there should be a little "bonus award ceremony" of sorts at the end of this :p.

Welcome back @TZDugong. Besides the two corrections @Corangurilla mentioned (both of which are true), there is another error:

Pick Your Poison: Completed
1. Strawberry Poison-Dart Frog, Oophaga pumilio - California Academy of Sciences
2. Green-and-Black Poison Dart Frog, Dendrobates auratus - California Academy of Sciences
3. Dyeing Poison Dart Frog, Dendrobates tinctorius - Toronto
4. Yellow-banded Poison Dart Frog, Dendrobates leucomelas - Toronto
5. Golden Poison Frog, Phyllobates terribilis - Woodland Park
6. Blue Poison Dart Frog, Dendrobates tinctorius - Woodland Park

I want you to look over the scientific names again - specifically #3 and #6 - and tell me if you spot a problem :p

Puny Primates: (2/6)
1. Common Marmoset, Callithrix jacchus - Toronto
2. Golden Lion Tamarin, Leontopithecus rosalia - Toronto

Does San Francisco not still have Pied Tamarin? And also I just thought they had a large primate collection in general.

I doubt you'll get a bonus point, but I think there should be a little "bonus award ceremony" of sorts at the end of this :p.

Don't get too ahead of me ;) I do like to do breakdowns and highlight achievements at the end of these competitions, and there's plenty to break down this year!

Posting this question here so more people can see the answer: do generic tigers/leopards count as hybrids and therefore, do not count for this challenge?

Posting this question here so more people can see the answer: do generic tigers/leopards count as hybrids and therefore, do not count for this challenge?

They do not count as hybrids because they still belong to one species, and are therefore kosher. I never deal in subspecies with these challenges.

In the rules (#8) I say: "Our unit is species, not subspecies." The hybrid rule follows this unit designation as well.

Thanks for the corrections, I've edited my list and so it should be accurate now.
Have to say, well played! Not easy to snag both a fish and an invert for that challenge!
The Angelfish was definitely a surprise, I only found out about its rarity due to the zoo's signage! For inverts the main problem was choosing which species to put on the list:p.
Does San Francisco not still have Pied Tamarin? And also I just thought they had a large primate collection in general.
I'm pretty sure they no longer have the Tamarins, I definitely didn't see any. I believe they had an exhibit in the old primate house, which is pretty much empty right now as it's being turned into a Madagascar building.

With the primate house closed, the collection is no longer that large. They still have a lot of Lemurs, but apart from that it's just Mandrills and the 3 great apes.

No Pied and Emperor Tamarins are long gone from SF. Sifaka is one of the aforementioned lemurs - and they should still have Patas and Colobus I thought.

And Francois Langur if the map is to be believed.
Unrelated, but I'm still salty that San Francisco no longer keeps Aye-Ayes. They were easily the highlight of my visit in 2014 and I will never have an experience like that again. :(
But whatever primates they have, they don't have any Callitrichids.

Doubled my total completed trials and I'm halfway done with this challenge!
I was expecting to complete both "The Big Squeeze" and "Silk and Stinger" with this trip, too, but I didn't see a Burmese Python and both Desert Hairy Scorpions eluded me...:(

Still a great showing, though! I think I also completed "Insane in the Mem-Crane", "Foot the (Horn)Bill", and "Hall Monitor (Lizard)"; three challenges I just made up because holy cow Wildlife World Zoo has a lot of cranes, hornbills, and monitor lizards.

Now if you'll excuse me, I think I need a nap after all that walking...
