Not seen this mentioned on the forum before (apologies if I missed it) but in the latest edition of the guide book there's a Coming Soon section. It mentions Wolverine and Smooth-coated Otters (already arrived), but then it also states the long term plan is to bring in Dholes when funds allow...

Just thought I'd point this interesting snippet out to those who may have missed it! ;):)

I believe Dholes are being considered as a possible replacement for the Singing Dogs if and when they pass away, and they can’t get more Singing Dogs.

There is one more exhibit being built for a large carnivore as well, but there is no sign saying what it’s for and when it’s arriving, so whilst some people may know already, it’s not public knowledge so it wouldn’t be right to put on here what it is.

So technically it will be 35 by the Spring :)

I'm trying to think of somewhere comparable and I'm drawing a blank. There's probably another smaller place that flies under the radar somewhere that we're both missing and is quite obvious though... :p

I see now that the Leopard is listed twice, as a African Leopard and just Leopard and they probably don't have European Polecat anymore, but they are still ahead. The two small collections that can challenge them are Wildkatzenzentrum Felidae and Donnersberg, but they are falling behind.

European Polecat
Think this may be an education animal if they still have it. :)

Donnersberg and Wildkatzenzentrum were my 2 best guesses to be honest, in fact Donnersberg was the actual collection I was thinking of that might beat them out. Great minds think alike I guess... ;):p

Looks like they'll be getting Dholes then, Singing Dogs are quite thin on the ground round these parts and Dholes are (comparitively) abundant... I'm really not complaining though as Exmoor will soon have my favourite Mustelid and Canine in one place, and if I'm pressed then Leopards are probably my favourite cat species as well... They just need to get some Kusimanse and Common Genet in and they'll have representatives of all my favourite carnivorous taxa from five different families! :p

For a while Exmoor and Axe were fairly close in number, but Exmoor have taken off in recent years... Though axe are in the mid 20s, putting them up there against many other collections.

Axe didn't even cross my mind...;) That is an impressive number given their size though! :)

Bristol Zoo's Red Panda's will be joining Exmoor Zoo in October. This is signposted at Exmoor Zoo, and states that the EEP have recommended this.

Also around the Zoo, there is a sign outside another development saying that a Snow Leopard will join in the spring.

The Snow Leopard exhibit is one being built down where the old River Hogs were. The Red Panda exhibit is where the old Agouti exhibit was.

Both have notices outside the exhibits being constructed stating the above.
Are you sure the red pandas are coming from Bristol? Only Bristol confirmed that the red pandas are going to the new Bristol zoo

34 Carnivores and counting! Exmoor is topping Europe (if one not count Russia) I am trying to find zoo in Europe with more species (not taxa) of family Carnivora. Both Berlins, Prague, Plzen, Jihlava, Wroclaw, Poznan Nowe, Pairi Daisa, Park Des Felins, Beauval, Hamerton are behind. Any suggestions?
I was thinking about Domaine des Fauves but it has only 27 !

Yeah but still odd I think, red Panda are fairly small so thread enclosure wouldn’t take long I wouldn’t think

I think the key thing is, a lot of people are expecting things to happen quicker than it will re Wild Place. It's not going to be a case of Bristol closes in September and other animals go to Wild Place straight away.
Staff have been kept on at Bristol until the new year, and this is to help with the moving of the collection and caring for what's left.

From what has been said by WPP, I doubt that until the summer of 2024 any of the new exhibits and new branded zoo will open.

I think those hoping for stuff later this year, or even next year will be disappointed.

WPP have said they don't intend to close at all, but I find this odd, as surely for all the rebranding and so on, and buildings to go up, there has to be a period of closure before it reopens as Bristol Zoo?

On the subject of 'most carnivore species in a UK collection', how do Hamerton fare? I'd have expected them to rank quite highly. To be honest I'm astonished at how many Exmoor have got now, its incredible how far the place has come on!

They have facilities for visitors that are sufficient and as for the animal care at Bristol, they have access to the Clifton site until 2024 also some things like the conservation breeding centre and gorillas will take less time than the rhino habitat and enterance, but this is an exmoor zoo thread not Bristol zoo

I agree, each year they seems to make a better effort for their animal care, and they definitely have the most carnivores that I’ve seen in one collection

I just got back from a delightful visit to Exmoor Zoo! I need to thank twilighter for pointing out the presence of Europe's largest carnivore collection upthread. It encouraged me to actively try to see every carnivore at the zoo. In the end I saw all but two; the European Polecat (which is, as Brum rightly stated upthread, an encounters animal) and the Cheetah (which I somehow forgot about).

A few observations from my visit:

- The Shoebill was a true wonder to behold. A very exciting species and lifetick! I was somewhat disappointed (but not all that surprised) to see that the flamingos and shoebills were not sharing, and that the aviary had been split in half along the viewing area. It made me miss seeing the Scarlet Ibis who formerly inhabited the enclosure, and who could be found on both sides and above the intersection. The Ibis moved to share with the Puna Ibis and Hawaiian Goose at number 36 on the map.
- I thought that the Honey Badgers really suited the former porcupine enclosure well, as it gave them a lot of privacy. It took me 6 visits to this enclosure until I finally saw the mustelids, but they made it worth the wait!
- I really liked how the Pond Aviary was coming along. The European Pond Turtles in particular looked very much at home. I counted at least 7 and it suited them far better than their old enclosure in the Tropical House ever did.
- The Indian Peafowl that are free-roaming around the zoo had recently had chicks. Seeing peafowls with their chicks around every corner really bought a lot of life to the place and made it even more exciting than it already was!
- One of the three Bush Dog pups was very active and could be seen very well.
- Alwaysevergreen was right about the Red Pandas. The sign stated "The original agouti are still on display living in the dense undergrowth and can be seen moving within. It is our intention to exhibit red panda above these agouti. This refurbishment to the red panda has to be completed and the animal's acquired from Bristol Zoo before Bristol Zoo's closure anticipated at the end of October 2022." It also stated that this move was recommended by the Red Panda EEP.
- Half of the Alpaca enclosure has been fenced off so that construction of the Hyena enclosure (due to open in January 2023) can begin. I assume that they are Spotted, but I could not find any information confirming the species.
- Good progress is being made with regards to the Snow Leopard enclosure. The sign states that the animals are coming from Noderns Ark. The below photo shows progress so far:

- Exmoor Zoo has been badly affected by droughts, so water levels in enclosures are sometimes lower than they should be. This was particularly apparent at the Lake which was noticeably emptier than usual. As a result of this, there are several signs around the zoo encouraging visitors to try to waste less water. I appreciated this detail.

I hope that some of the above information is helpful! Any more information around the 'coming soon' exhibits would be really useful!

Because of avian influenza and the lack of recent rainfall lowering the lake levels, Exmoor Zoo have decided to catch up their pelicans and ducks and move them off-show.

They are currently trimming vegetation and doing remedial work to the lake and then the plan is to net over the lake to protect the collection birds from contact with wild birds.

Information comes from the Exmoor Zoo Facebook page.
