Unfortunately I don't have another visit planned at this stage, but I now have a membership (and a second home base in Canberra), so if I do, I'll try to ask! I found out about Tuli's pregnancy through the giraffe feed, so that was great.

No problem! Visiting in person is the best way to find out information (like you did at the giraffe talk). Email correspondence is often limited by the knowledge of the person on the other end - the extent of which can sometimes be the admission times and prices. I often ask multiple volunteers/staff a question until I get the answer, as similarly, their knowledge varies.

Thanks to @akasha, we've since learnt the hyena is a male named Cheka from Altina and that they'll be receiving a female shortly.

The new female has arrived, I'll find out her name and report back.

Fairly sure it is Thandiwe , from Monarto Safari Park, SA.

Thanks for letting us know. @Swanson02 had mentioned there was talk of transferring Thandiwe out of Monarto (albeit to Altina).

Her arrival would give Mogo the following:

0.1 Thandiwe (2014) Gamba x Forest
1.0 Cheka (2020) Imported 2021

Thandiwe is an experienced mother and will hopefully form a successful pairing with Cheka.

That was my confusion . I think I confused Thandiwe going somewhere to be paired with a male from Altina to Thandiwe actually going to Altina.

No problem, I myself had assumed Mogo would be getting a younger female (either Fahari or Mahali, who were born 2020) as that’d align more closely with Cheka’s age.

While Thandiwe is by no means an old animal (given the species typically live into it’s 20’s; and can potentially reach 40 years), it’s likely we’ll see Mogo trying to breed from them sooner rather than later.

That’s a really good question and something I was talking about with someone the other day.

The answer is there’s no set formatting, but rather we all follow variations of listing name, gender, DOB and paternity.

My format for a male animal is:

1.0 Name in bold (DD/MM/YYYY) Sire x Dam

e.g. 1.0 Jantan (11/07/1987) Perang x Judy II

@WhistlingKite24 (who also writes population) lists the parentage in brackets and the DOB afterwards. It’s all down to personal preference.

Confirmation of new female hyena:

I’ve received email confirmation the new female hyena is indeed Thandiwe from Monarto Safari Park. She arrived in early August.

Mogo Wildlife Park’s pair is therefore as follows:

0.1 Thandiwe (00/00/2014) Gamba x Forest
1.0 Cheka (00/00/2020) Imported 2021

I wish the zoo every success with this pair, which consist of a founder male and a proven breeder female.

Congratulations also to @Swanson02, who correctly reported some time ago, plans to transfer Thandiwe out of Monarto.

Giraffe calf was born today to Tulii, both the calf (female) and mother looked to be doing really well.

Calf is on display if anybody wants to visit. There is also a litter of Meerkats venturing out into the display area now, I think the meerkat pups are about two or three weeks old.

It’s nice to see G-Anne has settled into life living alongside/seperate from the main troop. This option clearly suits her and is the best decision for her welfare.

Hopefully we’ll see an infant in the main troop in the coming years, once Mogo abandon trying to breed from a 43 year old female as has previously been reported and switch to her 11 year old daughter.

Mogo Wildlife Park has just announced via Zookeeper Chads Instagram that a Gorilla was born on Friday morning by Kipenzi. Kipenzi had to have surgery to remove the placenta and is noted to be recovering well. The post also states that Kisane took the baby from Kipenzi for about it 14 hours, but keepers were able to get the baby and give it a checkover

Zookeeper Chad has posted again, with photos confirming that the baby is a male: Zookeeper Chad on Instagram: "…part 2 Come Sunday morning, our priority is to now bring mum and baby back together. So first light at sunrise, baby is hydrated down with the gorilla group prior to reintroducing him back in with mum. Baby was set up on bedding material and mum and grandma are given access. Unfortunately no interest was observed what so ever on the cameras. We left as long as possible before going back to check. When we made the decision to again retrieve the baby, then challenge number 3 presented itself as the demeanour was different and colour had changed on the new born. Over the next few hours things began to crash. Thankfully a very special group of people made of Doctors and nurses (definable guardian angels) all specialising in neonatal care, came to our rescue and proceeded to give baby every bit of care available. Over the next couple of days and nights we have had some horrible scary moments and real positive signs, and now thankfully it feels like baby is headed in the right direction even if it is a very long journey ahead. As in all serious situations like this you seem to take 5 steps forward then 2 steps back. It looks like we were dealing with a sepsis pneumonia time bomb, so the silver lining is at least we had access to baby so some real heroes could swoop in when crucially needed…"

Does this mean the baby will be permanently separated? Or will they attempt to reintroduce him to mum when he hopefully recovers? I assume the longer they are separated the chances of a successful reintroduction dwindles.

I don't know, although hopefully there will be further attempts at reintroduction, if this is safe for the baby. It's certainly not an ideal situation, although I trust that the staff at Mogo are providing the best care they can in difficult circumstances.
