Netherlands trip

With public transport I also would say to skip De Paay because it's almost impossible to reach it without a car.... sorry.
I would recommend to visit Ouwehands and then maybe Amersfoort on day one and then Burger's Arnhem on day 2.

Yes, may have to skip De Paay, ah well. Another time!

Amersfoort looks quite an ABC collection?

Amersfoort is one of 5 ZTL collections with giant horned lizards and one of two with spiny chuckwallas.

Hi all,

I'm considering a trip to the Netherlands to specifically see the cuscus at Ouwehands and visit Burgers, as they seem to very close to each other.

What else should I be thinking of adding to the itinerary? Am very keen on rarities, mammals, birds and herps (not so fussed by fish or inverts).
Hi you should connect with the member Snowleopard. He is currently touring the Netherlands zoos.

I'm enjoying his posts, but I think he is in the Nordics, isn't he?
Lol yes my mistake that trip to the Netherlands was in 2019. He did like 40 zoos there. So he can tell you which to avoid and save money and time. Safe travels! Enjoy!!
Pretty sure he is in Canada.
Yes he is probably back as school is about to begin in Canada!! I always enjoy your post!! Keep up the great work friend!!

I'm booked - 8th-9th October! Early flight into Amsterdam means I can get to Ouwehands when it opens. Going to have a think about De Paay - it does look pretty barren on Zoochat pictures but the grisons are tempting. I won't have a car, so it may not be realistic.

Then will have a night in Arnhem, see Burgers when it opens and be back in Amsterdam for supper before a late flight.

@lintworm , I'll let you know my fine-tuned plans closer to the time!

Without a car, combining Ouwehands with any other zoo is not realistic... Depending on your interest you could either go birding around Ouwehands or I would suggest visiting the Airborne museum in Oosterbeek (which is between Ouwehands and Arnhem), if you have any interest in (war) history.

The forest near Ouwehands has all the classic forest birds and a normally showy tawny owl. The riverine area just below is interesting for water birds. The spoonbill colony will be gone by October, but there is a chance of osprey on migration then...

Birding sounds like a great plan. Do you have black woodpeckers around there?

When I spent a month in Europe in the summer of 2019, I ended up visiting 43 Dutch zoos as part of that trip. The day I was at Burgers' Zoo I didn't see any other facility, as that is a world-class establishment that deserves attention and time spent there can range from 5 hours to an entire day. However, Ouwehands isn't nearly as big and can be combined with other zoological facilities.

On August 4th, 2019, I spent 2-3 hours at ZooParc Overloon in the morning (a very nice zoo!), then I drove an hour to De Paay (probably an hour there max. as it's the worst zoo in the Netherlands), then I drove only 10 minutes down the road to Aquazoo Leerdam (a tiny aquarium) and finally I drove 40 minutes to Ouwehands and I ended up staying 3 hours at that ABC mammal-friendly zoo. Since then, they've added new exhibits like Bonobos, but Ouwehands is probably a 4-hour zoo at best. The key would likely be a rental vehicle, which speeds things up considerably on trips.

If you want to know anything about the 43 Dutch zoos that I visited, then all the information is on this thread in terms of the list of species, or time spent at each zoo. You can even use the search button to quickly look up a facility. Here you go:
