On July 19th, the zoo announced that their (0.1) African lion named Akili has passed away after being fatally injured during introductions with their newly acquired (1.0) African lion named Josh on July 18th. She was ~17 years old.

Just awful news. Akili would've been 17 years old on August 25.

That is very sad to hear! This must have been a horrific death for Akili, but at least she lived to be 17 years old, which is three years past the median life expectancy.

It's surprising to see they attempted to introduce an older female to a younger male. This is rather unusual, as most of the time, the older female is rejected, due to them being post reproductive.
 
On August 29th, the zoo announced that they acquired a (1.0) red-tailed hawk named Vulcan which is now rotating on exhibit with their (0.0.1) black vulture named Wakinyan in the new bird of prey exhibit.
