Bristol Zoo (Closed) Bristol Zoo News 2022

I think the best outcome for the Asiatic Lions would be to move to Wild Place. The Lions are a big draw for punters and the Asiatic subspecies is critically endangered. If there were 10 Species that brought guests to Bristol Zoo the Asiatic Lions would be 1 of them.
I mean it would be ideal but unlikely from what other people have said on the Bristol zoo threads, it would be nice for them to have other big cats in the future

Does anyone know anymore information regarding the move, they’ve kept quiet for quite a few months and I was thinking they must announce the full plan soon but I don’t know now

Personally I think we should speculate more lol
Certainly not in a news thread.

If anyone does, I highly doubt they will post it on here before any announcements by the zoo.

I made a speculation thread on Bristol zoo incase anyone knows any speculation or wants to speculate, but it would still be nice to know, it’s been a while since the zoo announced anything regarding the new Bristol zoo

Certainly not in a news thread.

Speculation, I feel, is okay in news threads; but only when it surrounds a piece of news that may have been recently announced.

Random speculation can flood the news threads; especially when it's done more than it needs too.

I don't really think this is needed, people should just be more mindful what they're posting on these news threads. There's no need to speculate something every single day.

Well Hedgehog, I actually agree with your statement here. But it isn't going to happen it seems.

I think I'm right in saying that the only thing we know about the lions is that they weren't included in the list of animals due to move to to Wild Place in time for it opening as the new Bristol Zoo and no mention was made of bringing them back there in the future.

Logically, we can also assume there will be a limit on how long they can stay at the Clifton site once it has closed, as at some point the site will need to be cleared of animals completely as most of it is being sold.

Anything beyond that is speculation at this stage.

They haven’t fully written it off it isn’t official however unlikely, but then again lots of animals are still unannounced

No, not explicitly - but it doesn't change my point. We only know what they've actually said. And they've given a list of species that are moving that very much did not include the lions. It might just mean they've not made a final decision yet. But either way, it means it's unlikely anyone on here will be able to predict where individual lions will move..!

Does anyone think they will have anymore animals announced now? On their design proposals there are a few odd habitats which they haven’t labelled but I’m not sure if that’s where already announced animals are going

They aren't moving to wild place.

Apparently the red pandas currently at Bristol zoo are not moving to wildplace, I am unsure if they will still have red pandas at wildplace or not, any thoughts or extra information?

Today I made my first and last visit to Bristol Zoo. It was rather bittersweet, I enjoyed my time there a lot and went round basically the entire zoo twice and went back to some areas multiple times. The whole time I was there though, I could only think how great of a shame it was that we are losing this fantastic zoo.

And it really is fantastic, everything I had heard over the years was true. The enclosures are superb, the history is very well preserved and there is a great deal of charm and character to the entire zoo. I was pleasantly surprised that there was hardly any empty exhibits! (I think I only missed the nocturnal house and the pygmy hippos that left earlier this year)

There was a lot of personal highlights, Seal and Penguin Coast was absolutely fantastic, great views of the seals and it was lovely to watch the talk and seeing them get fed. The tunnels provide some really great views too (I haven't viewed pinnipeds like that before). What really made it for me was the inclusion of a walkthrough Inca tern exhibit in the penguin section, absolutely beautiful and very active birds! Makes me sad that Chester's plans to get them fell through.

The Gorilla Island has a lot of character, I love how the gorilla house is quite literally a house. Being able to view the gorillas from above via the glass ceiling was certainly an experience... A bit scary too! I think Bristol's gorillas are the most active I have ever seen honestly, and Jock is quite the impressive individual.

The reptile house, aquarium and bug world are all really great and I think the small stuff is where Bristol really excels. All pretty jam packed with a lot of variety! I had no idea those tiny brown chameleons (name evading me currently) were in captivity so after spending quite a while trying to find one, I can say it was worth it. ;) Seeing the Partula was also a highlight.

I don't want to write a giant review so just some final words. The zoo was VERY busy, one of the busiest I have seen a zoo in a long time which I assume is a mix of the small size and the imminent closure... I overheard quite a few visitors saying how much they would miss the zoo or how they hadn't visited in a long time, once again, bittersweet I suppose. Also, London should really take notes on balancing historical preservation and providing a large interesting collection from Bristol!

Overall, fantastic zoo and I am so very very glad I made the rather expensive (for a student ) and long (7 hours combined on the train ) journey before closure. Such a sad loss but I am sure we will all remember the zoo fondly :D

(Note for moderators: Unsure if this thread was better or the Bristol Memories thread? Was unsure if reviving an older thread would have been better, if you feel like this post should be moved... Please do so!)

Bristol Zoo has now closed for the final time. To say I’m devastated is an understatement. I’ve created many memories at Bristol Zoo. I spent my 12th Birthday at the Zoo. I remember going on a road train I know this sounds obscure but I remember I had a digital watch on my wrist. Fast forward a few years and my Younger Sister insisted on going on the Zooropia course. Much to my amusement she got less than half way around the course, before she started balling her eyes out and screaming the Zoo down.

Do you think we’ll be able to see the Gorilla Family at Wild Place,by this time next year? I hope to visit Wild Place at some point. However I’ll wait until the Gorillas have moved in.

I am devasted too, I’ve spent countless birthdays there even my last one and it’s a real tragedy to see it go, it was so busy and I hope they learn that with the right marketing and a good spirit they can create a good zoo

to answer your question, maybe I think it is 18 months ish till the opening as they said early 2024 but it’ll probably be mid now, the gorillas enclosure I think will be completed around the middle of the phase one as it isn’t as much work as the Rhinos and the buildings

I’m especially sad as I kept hope that they would keep animals like the warty pigs and other animals relevant to their conservation but the warty pigs are moving on now

*fingers crossed* they announce all the animals and the plans soon

Unless you're older than you have claimed, you didn't :p as they definitely didn't have a road train at the zoo in the early 2010s when I first visited!

@TeaLovingDave I definitely went on a Road Train. I remember the driver teaching us the history of the Zoo, and pointing out the original entrance. The date I went on the Road Train was the 26th November 2012. I remember this date as it was my 12th Birthday. Maybe the Road Train was only at the Zoo over Christmas.
