The regional giraffe population will no doubt experience some significant changes soon given the giraffe IRA for New Zealand is now complete. The obvious initial imports for the region are a bull for Orana Willdife Park; and a cow for Auckland Zoo. I’ve speculated their apparent decision to delay breeding from their youngest cow to be a consequence of anticipating this import.
Irregardless of when Australia’s giraffe IRA is finalised, they could potentially import via New Zealand given giraffe imports from New Zealand are permitted (as long as the giraffe has lived on New Zealand soil for a defined period - I’m assuming 12 months as per the previous Bovid requirements).
