Chester Zoo Chester Zoo News 2022

Per my post on Thursday #357 I was told by a staff member a new enclosure would be built for Snow Leopards near the red pandas. This information was volunteered and was told this is not confidential.
For your context I was having a telephone conversation with the donations team concerning grasslands.
I was as surprised as you all seem to be, but I have to assume the information is correct. Time will tell.

Thanks Jonfla, my question was mainly to JDE7582 however who seems to make a statement of said animals , numbers and where they will be housed, and I was trying to ascertain if it was his/her opinion or if he had been told.

I read your post prior, but theirs seemed to confirm it, but without source.

Further to which, the project is now Heart Of Africa and not Grasslands.

I have also heard about the snow leopard move from a staff member at Chester but had assumed the information was confidential at the time so hadn't said anything. I don't imagine that snow leopards will be arriving any time soon though as the Blesboks would need to be moved out first & the paddock modified to house large carnivore species...

Appologies if it came across like that, I did use the words "could, maybe" in my post, it was just speculating where they could go and an example as to why they may have acquired some before a ready enclosure was built.

I have no current knowledge of any future animal arrivals

Looking at the plans, I wonder what small mammal will go into the habitat attached to the new restaurant.

Also there is a possible aviary next to the hoofstock building.

I believe this is to protect the ostriches from bird flu in any outbreak, will allow some outside access and will potentially keep wild birds from close contact.

Kyra seems to have been confirmed to be moving to Paradise Wildlife Park.
Sun Bear Heights UPDATE - A UK First Mixed Species Habitat! - YouTube
Paradise Wildlife Park have released a video on their YouTube giving an update on the ongoing work on Sun Bear Heights, and the facilities for all 3 species. The video also confirms that they have a pair set to arrive and hopefully breed, and the female of this pair is Kyra, born and currently living at Chester Zoo. It also mentions they will do a similar video for the new (redeveloped I believe) Jaguar Jungle enclosure next week.
Edit: it appears the male Sun Bear is Indera from Belfast Zoo.

All this excitement concerning Snow Leopards reminds me of the time a keeper told me Chester was getting African Wild Dogs. It took about 20 years for them to arrive. On the other hand I asked a member of staff at Chester how long before the Warty Pigs arrived and was told 2-3 years. Thye were there in 2 weeks.

Steller's Sea Eagles and Siberian Cranes which were due at the end of the 1980s have still not shown up.

What does this mean for spirit of the jaguar
Bush dogs allowed outside, a new Jaguar???

One thing I would really love for this area is the arrival of a puma/cougar/mountain lion what ever you want to call it. I know it is a long shot but I think it could be a nice concept. The building could get renamed something like cats of the americas but the only trouble is that I don't know where the Bush dogs would go buy like I say this is just an idea which will probably never happen

I mean last time I went which was in August their was a lot of people working in the old bushdog enclosure personally I would love to see 5 jaguars at Chester again some on the savannah side and some on the rainforest enclosure because prior to salvadors death in late 2011 they had 5 jaguars

Salvador (died in 2011 at Chester and Sofia (died in April this year at the big cat sanctuary) had the outdoor and indoor savannah side

On the rainforest side was
Pele - died in 2013 at Chester he had the indoor rainforest area but soon had access to the outdoor area from late 2011 after his former mate and son moved to the savannah side and was mixed with sofia as a non breeding pair

Outdoor rainforest enclosure
Bonita - died in amazona zoo in 2017
Coro- died in 2021 at amazona they used to have access to the outdoor Rainforest area and an offshow den however they moved to the savannah side after salvador died and moved to amazona zoo in 2012

So personally I'd like to see spirit of the jaguar being used for jaguars again or if not use the savannah side for another species of south american animal like

Ocelot
Margay
Maned wolf
Cougar

And I would also like to see the agoutis with indoor access to the sloth enclosure

Grasslands is being renamed Heart of Africa, with spades due in the ground January/February.

I seem to remember someone telling me that construction of Heart of Africa was slated to begin in October - has there been some kind of delay or am I misunderstanding (I know very little about how these things work)?

A new male roan antelope has arrived at Chester Zoo from Watatunga Wildlife Reserve to become a breeding male. In exchange, a male sitatunga (named Terry) that was surplus to Chester has moved to Watatunga.

Information comes from the Watatunga Wildlife Reserve Facebook page.

Whats his name

Just got back from 2 lovely days around the zoo although the weather was mixed (windy, chilly and rainy but some sun at times too) but didn't spoil my day too much.

Here is a list of construction work happening around the zoo on my 2 day visit.

- Stable block construction progressing nicely.
- Work happening in the main Cheetah enclosure, looked like a drainage system but honestly don't know.
- Giant Anteater enclosure behind Capybaras, I saw a couple of workers digging around the fence line.
- On my second day I saw workers on the roof of the toilet block by Oakfield.
- Work also progressing nicely on the new animal house by mini monkeys.

The last remaining Cheetah has been moved into the old Bush Dog enclosure.

I did manage to see for my first ever time all 3 baby Fossa on both days which was my main highlight and they are so cute.

I sadly didn't manage to see my first ever Blesbok, there was signage for them but were told they could have been moved off show.

The 2 bigger Hornbill aviaries in Tropical Realm were fenced off both days but no idea on the reason unless they have had chicks. A couple of paths were also blocked off around the zoo.

All in all I had 2 lovely days around the zoo but my feet and legs are feeling it now.
