In recent weeks, the first monkeys have arrived for the new monkey island. The island is still under construction, so the animals are still behind the scenes.

- A female white-faced saki (Pithecia pithecia) came from a zoo in France.

- Three golden lion tamarins (Leontopithecus rosalia) also came from a zoo in France.

- A group of 11 Bearded emperor tamarins (Saguinus imperator subgrisescens) came from Tierpark Bern in Switzerland.

At Wildlands yesterday, lioness Tia died at the age of almost 16. Investigations revealed that she died as a result of a fight.

The zoo's lion pride is in the midst of introducing a new male. This 12-year-old lion, Jafar, arrived in Emmen from France early last month. Step by step, he has been introduced to the lionesses. Because lioness Tia was highest in rank among the ladies, keepers still saw friction between her and the new lion male at times. Why things went wrong on the night from Saturday to Sunday cannot be said. Camera footage shows nothing of the fight. Keepers found the lioness dead in the morning in the outside enclosure.

At the moment, the introduction of the new male into the lion pride continues. The four lions can choose whether they want to be in the outdoor or indoor enclosure.

The square itself, formerly known as 'Compass Square' is now called 'Mondiala Square'. Which means square of the world. The monkey area in this square is called 'The Monkey Ruin' ('De Apenruïne').

Thanks for the addition, I always forget that 'Square' exists and jump to Plaza

There have been a number of transfers among the white rhinos at Wildlands in recent weeks. Two of the three adult rhinos at Wildlands have moved to Safaripark Beekse Bergen. They are 21-year-old male Limpopo and 13-year-old female Zahra. 37-year-old female Emily will also move to another zoo next spring.

In addition, three young males have come to Wildlands to form a bachelor group. From Burgers' Zoo came 3-year-old Diederik and 2-year-old Rolf. From Pairi Daiza came 3-year-old Zimba. They are now getting used to each other behind the scenes.

A black-headed spider monkey was born in the zoo! Apparently the birth of this youngster came as a surprise to the keepers. :) The youngster is already visible for visitors with its mom in the enclosure. It's not sure wheather the baby is a boy or girl.
