Chester Zoo Chester Zoo Discussion and Questions 2022

Well just in answer to several posts on here regarding the possibility of Snow Leopards coming to Chester Zoo. Well, all of those who have membership will have your Z Magazine on your doorstep any day now.

In here is the breaking News that work has begun on the new Himalayan Zone which will include a state-of-the-art enclosure for Snow Leopards. And Chester Zoo are looking forwards to welcoming a Breeding Pair in 2024.

Also confirmed is work is starting soon on 'Heart Of Africa' and this 27-acre exhibit will be hopefully completed by 2025.

Does it mention where in the zoo the snow leopard enclosure will be?

No, it doesn't. I had assumed that its would be beyond the Oakfield/by the staff entrance where there are lots of old unused enclosures, but I have absolutely no evidence for that.

They could have so easily said in the magazine of course. A simple but useful thing to have done.

Does anyone know what happened to 2nd male painted dog ivar because I was just watching the episode of slotz where k'mana gives birth and during a Caracass feed segment I noticed him walking past her and ville does anyone know what happened to him did he die or did he move on to another zoo

I've heard that the snow leopard exhibit will be where the Blesbok are currently held, meaning that the area will require significant develop to house large carnivores.

have tried asking a few questions today, only clue I got from a good friend of mine who works @ Chester Zoo is the proposed Himalayan zone is the area near the Red Pandas, close to Oakfield House. But exactly where im not sure

Ah, that concurs with @Benobo88, the paddock where the blesbok are now could be the location. Still circumstantial evidence, but makes sense.

I’ve been told the snow leopards will definitely be where the blesbok have been kept and also the bird nursery will make way for snow leopards too. I wondered if the zoo will bring back pallas’s cats as part of this zone?

So I hear from here that Chester are planning a Himalaya Zone? As well as the Snow Leopard and if they hold Himalayan Monal, would be a far far stretch on a wish list to see Tibetan Wolves? But I don't know if any world zoo holds them (Darjeeling Zoo,India)

That's true. Snow Leopards and Red Pandas seem to be the two main species, and Himalayan Monal are possible. I doubt they'd get Tibetan Wolves (but it is Chester, so who knows). Another species to add may of course be Sichuan Takin.

So with giraffes going to Heart of Africa, what's happening to their old area? I think ideally, give that space to the Indian rhinos and use their old space to expand for the elephant herd.

Initially it was to be used for Gorillas and the African dome, but i'm not sure whether Chester still plans to do this.

I'd much prefer for the space to be given to their elephants; a bigger bull paddock is something Chester needs asap.

The African dome was going to be on extra land, now the lion enclosure location , the last time it was mentioned, the current giraffe paddack will be part of the new gorilla habitat or around there anyway, including the tropical house , but as its a while off, plans may very well change.

re: the Himalayas discussion. With red panda and monal already in this general area maybe this all isn't too surprising. ;)

I do wonder how much more species will be in this area. The return of manul and the addition of a caprine like takin, tahr, or markhor would be great.

I think a few people are getting over excited here. They say they are building a Snow Leopard exhibit, and already people are turning it into a whole themed area, with lots more exhibits. This has not been reported and with all the Heart Of Africa work, I doubt there is time, or resource to have two massive new sections underway at once.

I am surprised to read that the Parrot nursery is being used as said above, as this is the offices and breeding centre of the parrot team and they have a number of off show aviaries which comes out from their hub, with the on show exhibit at the end. All the aviaries were full recently, so I would surprise to see a whole hub area be used, especially when the other bird team are based in the Tropical Realm, and at some point that will be knocked down.

I can understand the temporary Blesbok paddock being used, but would be surprised if the parrot nursery was sacrificed.

@Ed123 mentioned the 'bird nursery' not 'parrot nursery'. There's a small enclosure next to the blesbok paddock used for rearing young birds, mainly (or even exclusively?) waterfowl. I suspect that's the bird nursery referred to.

It's a Himalayan zone planned that features a snow leopard exhibit; so there's a possibility for additional species too.

I would hope that the Himalayan development would allow the Derbyan parakeets to go back on-show (as far as I know, they are still at the zoo). The red-billed blue magpies would also qualify for a place. There are also many other species of pheasant from the area, and birds such as the alpine chough which could be added to the collection. I doubt whether there would be enough space for large ungulates, such as yak, bharal or the species suggested by @Mayki, but smaller species like muntjac, tufted deer or even goral might be feasible.

Ahh okay, there are three exhibits there in that section. Having had a tour of it, there's a small building and three exhibits, of which two are off show.

This is where the vultures for Heart Of Africa are, and also another Crowned Crane, the exhibit on show, has Plovers and Ducks in it, which people can see into.

The building as a few nurseries for ducks.

It's not a huge section, but there is still birds there.
