Prague Zoo Praha Prague Zoo News 2022

Hope for you to get better and eventually enjoy Pilsen!
Glad for palawan cat (have exactly same experience : D once from... mhm... many visits :D)
About (too much?) space for visitors - I guess it is after experiences with "old" gorilla house, especially in summer terribly overcrowded
Btw does anyone know about red river hogs? Maybe they aren´t there yet?
(they were already photos of various inhabitants before Dja opening, but hogs either weren´t among them, or I missed them)
@Fat-tailed dwarf lemur - thanks, glad my memory works well

Thank you! I had an awful night and had to delay my travel to Plzen and plan to rest today and have a full day at the zoo tomorrow.

Thank you for many informations !
Sable antelopes were also separated into 2 groups ? Do they only live on the African plain or next to the bongos to ?

There were good-sized groups of Sable Antelope in both those paddocks earlier this month. :)

Sounds good! The porcupines honestly won't be missed much, and it's nice to get something more fitting to replace it (hopefully the aviary will house eastern Asian birds)

Well, Prague won´t be without these rodents - there are still porcupines (in African house, in upper part, even if different species...) or they are/will be gone too?

Even if the Indian ones go completely from the zoo following this development, there will still be no fewer than four porcupine species on show - Cape (Africa house), Palawan (Indonesia house), African Brush-tailed (new gorilla house), North American Tree (outside Indonesia house)..!

There is long way between a pregnancy and a weaned healthy cub (or how do you call a baby pangolin in English?). However Taipei zoo did excellent job with the species, sent an established and already proven pair and transfered their extensive know-how. It would be a pity if Prague would squander such a good chance. Fingers crossed.

In other news, 3 baby Bornean river turtles (Orlitia borneensis) hatched in last 2 weeks. Prague is studbook keeper of this species in EAZA.

Fantastic news about both the pangolins and the turtles. Fingers crossed for a successful future with the pangolins especially!

Good news for porcupine fans. Indian crested porcupines will remain in the zoo. They will get a new 100m2 exhibit, located between giant tortoises and giant salamanders. The zoo just asked construction companies to send price bids in.

7 baby Greater white pelicans are being hand-reared by keepers.

Introduction of gorilla male Kisumu into the female group started.

So far it looks like Kisumu and Duni can only see the others visually, with a whole cage space between them. Next stage will be direct contact through grille.

Update on Dja (new gorilla house):

- gorilla male Kisumu and new female Duni were successufuly united with all females (+Ajabu) last week. Also guerezas were successfuly mixed with this gorilla group.
- one additional reptile species living in the new house have not been mentioned here yet I think -forest hinge-back tortoise (Kinixys erosa)
- the only invisible (absent?) species in new gorilla house seems to be red river hogs, i havent seen any and dont know any photo made by regular visitors of them.
- according to staff, wild sousliks (living in nearby colony) have visited the gorilla exhibit regularly this summer. Now they hibernate of course. But this is one additonal species to tick off during spring/summer here.
- new zoo entrance built together with the gorilla house is open and running. It can be reached by city public transport (metro station "Holešovice" + bus line 234).

Enigmatic leaf turles (Cyclemys enigmatica) have bred again - 3 babies. This species arrived in zoo in 2004 when large illegal shipment was seized in HongKong and sent to Europe. They got their scientific name only in year 2008. Adult turtles live freely in visitors area on first floor of Indonesian house and they lay their eggs there, keepers find hatchlings around that little stream in front of orangutans.

They won't be moved there until they are 100% sure the gorilla group is okay I would say

Personally I wish the zoo would give up on them. Once they will get out, they will destroy all vegetation and turn the exhibit into mud field. If they feel they must mix guenons with second species, I would prefer something like duiker or sitatunga.
