The Zoochat Photographic Guide To Mesites, Pigeons And Sandgrouse

Blue-headed Quail-dove (Starnoenas cyanocephala)

Endemic to Cuba.

Monotypic; no photographs of this species are present in the Zoochat gallery.

Just uploaded 2 photo's of this species in the "Animal at Shows" Gallery thinking I would add another species new to the Gallery but by checking I found out that @Mo Hassan had already uploaded a photo of the species in April this year. So now we have 3 photo's of this Endangered species :).
I made my photos yesterday at a Bird market in the Netherlands and althrough the species is Endangered and rare at zoos ( ZTL lists 6 collections in Europe currently keeping it ) in the privat hobby the species seems to do quite well and at least 2 different breeders offered a total of about 12 birds for sell on this market !
BTW : took care for the species myself in the mid-1980s at Walsrode :)

Photo uploaded by @Mo Hassan :

and the 2 photos I just uploaded :

6 zoos in Europe?!?!?!?!?! I tought it was totally absent from captivity!!!!! IThey must be all recent acquisitions!! It's one of my most favourite pigeon species and I would love to substitute my taxidermy photo for an alive photo :-)

Yes they are indeed very recent acquisitions. Most of the zoos obtained their birds 2021 ( Plzen, Cleres, Cologne and Warsaw ), the other two ( Leipzig and Zürich ) obtained them this year. The sourch from where these birds came is however unknown to me. Hopefully they will cooperate in some kind of breeding-programm because the species has been kept also in the past in several zoos but disapeared then again.

Is there really no photos of double-banded sandgrouse? They're fairly easy to see in Kruger national park. I have a photo somewhere that I'll have a rummage for and upload.
