Linton Zoological Gardens News from Linton Zoo

Great news from Linton Zoo

The UK has quoll again!

1.2, Eastern Quoll arrived this week, only the male is currently on show though

That’s great news, so looking forward to the chance of seeing quolls again. I wonder where they are enclosure wise. Thanks for sharing!

Visited today (first time since 2018), and sadly the Quoll were a no-show, despite visiting the enclosure 5 or 6 times, and the same can be said about the Scottish Wildcat sisters. It was nice seeing the 4 Zebras in their large paddock, especially the individuals that potentially shaped my love of Zebras. I was amused at the Southern Ground Hornbills and their antics of picking up stones, and quite pleased by the bird collection in general. I was pleasantly surprised (I shouldn't have been) with the presence of Porcupines, and I liked the old fashionedness of the zoo, mostly in the design ofenclosures. For example, while being in one of the small animal houses and standing next to the indoors that are shared by Crowned Pigeons and 2 other species, I was able to quietly stand next to a nesting Crowned Pigeon and observe the birds inside, while almost being in the same place as the Crowned Pigeon and their noisy housemates. It is also nice to see smaller zoos like Linton focusing and excelling in keeping Critically Endangered species, such as the White Collared Lemurs here at Linton.

Up at Linton today (also went over to Shepreth) - evasive quolls despite a few visits to the enclosure but that’s unsurprising! Took me an age to see them for the first time at Hamerton so expecting a few visits before a sighting. Not sure if they are getting a viewable outdoor space. The new indoor viewing area has some nice backdrops.

Not too busy at the zoo and every time I visit I’m reminded of wandering in a pleasant woodland - that then has vultures and lions in it. It has a lovely ambience all round.

All the other animals made up for the hidden quolls by being out and about, even the rarer lemurs were in their outdoor spaces. Saw the baby white collared lemur playing about - lovely. Was just the right temperature for the animals to be out and about though the wildcats were in their top box and so not good for photos today.

The Victoria crowned pigeons had an egg in their nest but not sure if it was a real one or an encouragement egg etc as they were not sitting on it. They looked very happy together generally.

Work going on around the zoo too, at the back of the toilet block some new structure and also in the area where the playground used to be opposite the tapirs - a new house that looks like an animal house has gone up - perhaps it is a new enclosure.

I have only seen the quoll first thing or late in the day since hatch to back exhibit has been opened.

Behind toilet block will be new covered picnic area. Building near old playground is for the radiated tortoises

Thanks - was there early and went back around quite a few times but will persist! Good news on the new structures.

Sorry-I had to laugh..."behind the toilet block" sounds like such scenic and pleasant spot to eat your lunch!!!

I had a most enjoyable day at Linton yesterday.

The collection is well underway in completing the Radiated Tortoise house, and the new garden that will be in front of it.

The juvenile Vulture was very playful around its mum, whilst I got a nice shot of the White Collared Lemur in the morning, with it's mum.

I would advise people to keep an eye on Linton's socials, as there will probably be a nice announcement in the next week or so.

Found every exhibit really good for photos, and I stayed from 10.30 to closure and could have happily stayed longer. Had a lovely day and was the first time I've found a zoo with a really good vegetarian menu.

Second highlight of the day was the beautiful Eastern Quolls. A brown one called Awa and a black one called Stella. These were the two females, who were really playful and active and were lovely to see. I've put some photo's in the gallery.

Highlight of the day, promised not to say anything about! But I'm sure the Zoo will announce in due course and when they do, I will post a load of photo's in the gallery.

Really loved my visit to Linton, a zoo I'm definitely looking forward to returning to.

Some Quoll pics below, more in the gallery.

Introducing Erro, the latest addition to our Lowland tapir family, born on 3rd October 2022. | By Linton Zoo | Facebook
Sorry to ruin your surprise, but it now seems that the recently announced baby Tapir was your highlight of the day, called Erro, but they don't seem to mention a gender. Is the older sibling still there as well? I noticed 3 adults when I visited at the end of August- do they normally keep the older sibling around for a while after a baby is born?

You are most correct @Rajang-GOAT . I was asked not to put anything on socials or anything about Erro, a newborn Brazilian Tapir. He was born on Monday 3rd October and I was lucky enough to see him on the 6th October in the house, suckling off his mother. He is an absolute sweetie and as Linton's video shows, he is now venturing outside with mum.

In regards to his sister, who is two I think. She hasn't got a new collection lined up at present, but obviously that is a decision for the stud book to make, as and when she is needed.

Originally, it was Mum, older sibling and Erro in together, but he kept looking to suckle off sister as well as mother, so sister has now been moved in with Dad, into the other paddock, just whilst Erro gets a bit stronger and spends quality time with mum. The family group will be back together at some point.

They have regularly still kept the older sibling for a while when new calves have been born in the past. When the last calf was born both her older brothers were still at Linton, though one or both were often seen in the new separation paddock.

The older calf was born in August 2021

Had a lovely morning at Linton (went over to Shepreth for the afternoon) and actually saw the quolls! Didn’t get photos (glass woe) but felt like a treat anyway.

Erro the new baby tapir was out and about and active - lovely to see. Mum spent some time gazing at dad and the older sibling through the fence so looks like they will all enjoy being back together when the calf is old enough. The calf has loads of energy and was running about, fun stuff.

Also had some great views of the wildcats who were lounging in the Autumn sun and some busy lions. And had another excellent moment with the mongoose lemurs out and about in their outdoor area (they are often inside when I visit).

It’s a very nice place to be when the leaves are changing as you wander around the woods and enclosures, great atmosphere.

New species for Linton : Temminck's tragopan now in the ex snowy Owl enclosure

Was up at Linton yesterday (lovely weather) - I'd only spotted the male tragopan on my last visit and didn't know they had a pair, but got sightings of both male and female which was excellent.

I noticed the white collared lemurs are now signed in a couple of places, one opposite the quolls and one down the bottom next to the vultures, presume this is to accommodate the recent arrival as they get a bit older. The young tapir was looking really good too since I saw him as a young calf...great to see the whole family back together.

White-collared lemurs are on show in 4 enclosures, 2 opposite quolls, the one by the vultures and next to the café.
