On August 7th, it was announced that the zoo transferred (2.0) pygmy slow lorises named Havarti and Ricotta to the Akron Zoo in Ohio.

On September 9th, the zoo announced that they performed artificial insemination on their (0.2) polar bears named Aurora and Anana in March. Aurora has begun moving towards her den while Anana has been moved off exhibit due to odd behaviors.

There have only been 14 attempts to AI a polar bear in North America, and ~20 times worldwide, none of which were successful.

On September 17th, the zoo announced they have transferred (2.1) Florida manatees named Acorn, Einstein, and Scampi to a facility in central Florida to enter the final stages before being released into the wild.

Also on September 17th, the zoo celebrated its 95th anniversary.

On September 21st, the zoo announced it has received $500,000 from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources which will be used for upgrades to the facility's Freshwater Mussel Conservation and Research Center and general conservation work to restore native herptile populations.

On September 26th, the zoo announced that a (0.1) American bison named Clover passed away on September 24th at 19.5 years due to deteriorating health caused by chronic renal failure.

On September 27th, the zoo announced they implanted insertable cardiac monitors into their (2.0) western lowland gorillas named Mac and Ktembe, (1.1) Bornean orangutans named Sulango and Dumplin, and (2.0) bonobos named Jimmy and Maiko (marking this as the first time in history that ICM's were implanted into a bonobo).

On September 27th, the zoo announced that due to avian influenza, they have moved all at-risk bird species off exhibit and closed all aviaries to the public. On October 1st, the zoo announced that (0.0.5) black swans that the facility suspects might have been infected with bird flu passed away, though official confirmation from the USDA is still pending.

On October 2nd, the zoo announced that after bloodwork was done on their spotted hyenas, it was discovered that a female spotted hyena named Shenzi is actually a male.

I mean, if both of their hyenas were female, they’d be tearing each other apart. I think that’s how hyenas work? Male+Male=Minimal conflict. Female+Male=Some conflict/maybe babies. Female+Female=Bloodshed.

In most cases, but they can tolerate each other sometimes. Monarto Safari Park in Australia had two females born apart of the same litter a few years ago, and so far both haven't torn each other apart.

You posted this right as I checked the (in)famous “Perth Zoo Hyena Fight” video, in which both hyenas were male. :confused:

It really depends. Littermates can occasionally fight, and it's usually those of the same sex. Those of the opposite sex tend to get along much better as they're not 'threats' to each other in a sense.

Columbus Zoo announces death of 4-year-old Tasmanian devil ‘Mustard’

Mustard was euthanized on Sept. 4 after his keepers learned he was severely anemic?

Mustard was born on April 3, 2018, at the Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water & Environment in Hobart, Tasmania. Mustard, Thyme, and Sprout arrived at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in May 2019 through the Save the Tasmanian Devil Program (STDP).
 
Anana, the polar bear, was euthanized on October 12th. She’s been at the zoo since 2008 and had a female cub named Amelia Gray in 2016. Her sister, Aurora, and her were both artificially inseminated this spring and I was very hopeful that the girls would both have cubs this fall/winter but this is absolutely devastating :( Hopefully, Aurora has some cubs sometime in the next month or two at least!

They don't know, even though they'd run some tests when she fell unwell. It was mentioned it could've possibly been an autoimmune disease, but they weren't entirely sure.

Hopefully the results of the post mortem exam conducted will shield some light on her illness.
