Mammals in UK Collections

Following on from the discussion on red wolves ( I am glad that mystery has been solved ) and the exciting new species in the UK on a separate thread , I propose starting a list of mammal species currently in the UK . If this has been done elsewhere let me know .

It would be interesting to include species known to be in the UK but held by collections and individuals not on show to the public . This could make the list of rodents and other small mammals quite a bit longer I suspect .

Perhaps carnivores would be a group to start with . For species where there are recognised sub-species bred separately , I would list these e.g. wolves , leopards and tigers . I will start with members of the dog family I am aware of -

Grey wolf
European wolf
Iberian wolf
Dhole
Red fox
Corsac fox
Arctic fox
Bat-eared fox
Fennec fox
Black-backed jackal
New Guinea singing dog
African hunting dog
Maned wolf
Bush dog

I am not aware of any other pure wolf sub-species held although many are given labels such as Mackenzie River wolf . I am sure this could be clarified by other members and hopefully other species added .

If other members like the idea I hope you will start to add your lists of other groups and use combined knowledge to refine them . I supect it will be a surprise to find quite how many species are represented .

I believe that one of the wolf groups have a small pack of pure Mackenzie River Wolf, will see if its from one of the groups i have leaflets from or if it came from talking to a member of the group.

wow big idea! i love it.

so you've covered all the dog dpecies i've heard kept, so can't really add to that list but lets start another:

the easiest one i could think of:D: Hyenas!

spotted hyena
striped hyena

and aardwolf (didn't know wether or not to include them in the list):D

A very difficult one I've had to think over, and after much recollection I can present it here:

Pachyderms:
African Elephant
Asian Elephant

:P

Well technically...

Black Rhino
White Rhino
Indian Rhino
Common Hippo
Pygmy Hippo

would also be included in that list ;)

although Pachydermata isn't a recognised taxa is it?

No it's not. It's an old-fashioned no longer used taxa for rhinos hippos and elephants, as you pointed out. The term Pachyderm is now only used as a somewhat common term for elephants.

Very impressive! I didn't see Harvest Mouse on your list though (or am I just not paying enough attention?). They used to have those at Mablethorpe, I don't think they have any now but the New Forest Otter Owl & Wildlife Park probably does.

Oh and could anyone possibly tell me who keeps the two kinds of beavers??

Well spotted Sand Cat. I forgot to put the harvest mice down.

ISIS shows beavers at

Drusillas, Highland WLP and Birmingham (American)

Curraghs, Broxbourne, Martin Mere, Edinburgh, Herne Bay and Highland Wildlife Park (European)

I think Slimbridge are also having an exhibit for European Beavers.

Nice ones , the rodent list is impressive .

The bear situation is rather sad , though all species are represented most are in tiny numbers and old . Can anybody remember any recent bear beedings apart from the sloth bears at Regent's Park ? I remember when Regent's Park , Bristol , Chessington , Whipsnade and Chester all had many of the species , though admittedly most were far from ideally housed . The Kodiak bears at Whipsnade were very impressive and bred well though in a rather nasty pit .

Anyone going to have a go at the cats , quite a long list I suspect .

Otters -

Eurasian ( Common ) otter - not certain of proper title now
Canadian river otter
Giant otter
Asian small-clawed otter
Asian smooth-coated otter

( Would love to have sea otters on the list , they were originally planned for Living Coasts )
