Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden Cincinnati Zoo News 2022

Does Cincinnati Zoo plan to breed Masai Giraffes Fennessy and Theo with their opposite mothers (Fenn with CeCe and Theo with Tessa)? Both bulls are now around three years old, and are (surprisingly!) their only two bull giraffes.

No. There are no plans to breed at the zoo for the time being, however, Zoey will be leaving the zoo for breeding sometime soon. Also the older of the two young males, can’t remember which one, is castrated iirc.

Sabu the zoo's resident Asian Elephant bull has been sent to the Columbus Zoo on a temporary breeding loan whilst Cincinnati completes their new Elephant trek.

It'll be interesting to see what happens to Jati, Mai Thai and Schottzie - i'd assume they'd be transferred elsewhere temporarily too.

Mai Thai, Schottzie, and Jati will probably just stay at Elephant Reserve until their new exhibit opens, mainly because Mai Thai and Schottzie are too old to give birth (49 and 47 respectively), and Sabu has not gotten Jati (36) pregnant since his return to Cincinnati fifteen years ago, despite numerous attempts. Also, elephants have been a favorite of Cincinnati Zoo guests for over a century, so the zoo probably at least wants visitors to see them.

If they were to be transferred - it wouldn't be for breeding purposes.

Obviously Cincinnati has realised Jati's chances of breeding are rather slim, and hence have undertaken the Dublin import to provide Sabu with new females. Sabu's a very valuable male, and so the best course is to send him to a facility (prior to the Dublin girls arrival) to give him the opportunity to breed in the meantime.

Here are some updates from my visit to the zoo yesterday -

The Cincinnati Zoo recently acquired a young male ostrich which is now on display with Myrtle, the zoo's female ostrich. I am unsure what happened to Pam as she is no longer on display. This leaves the savanna with two common ostriches, a male lesser kudu, and a male impala.

With the loud noises of the construction on the bear line, the Arctic foxes were moved into the former saki exhibit in Jungle Trails. The Grey’s crowned guenons have been moved off display.

The zoo's female elephant Mai Thai is starting to be separated from the other two elephants, Schottzie and Jati. I assume this is mainly due to the aggression incident between them last winter.

Ajani Joe, the black rhino, has been weaned from his mother Seyia and now inhabits the side rhino yard.

Does anyone know when the male black howler monkey is due to arrive?
