Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo News 2022

the sloth house is now open and it seems like they built ropes overhead into the armadillo enclosure
Would be interesting actually to see all three members of Xenartha [sloths, anteaters, armadillos] combined - a fair number places keep the first and latter together but seemingly not the former - though I'd imagine tamanduas would be fairly easy to maintain in such a situation.

Maybe you should visit Dortmund which has a dedicated Xenarthran house with all three types ;)

That would be great if they did put them in but they already have anteaters in a great enclosure at the top of the hill plus there isn’t much space outside around the sloth house.

I visited the zoo a couple days ago. Here is some news:

1) The sloths now have much more climbing opportunities, with them being able to use ropes into the hairy armadillo enclosure and over the small area at the entrance. Only the female is in the enclosure at the moment. The enclosure has also been replanted.

2) I read in the RZSS magazine that the red pandas temporarily held at the zoo from HWP are being held in one of the former giant panda enclosures, although they are off-show.

3) the boardwalk out of budongo was closed for some reason, probably because it was slippy.

4) there has been a lot of new replanting going on, including outside the giraffe enclosure.

5) the cuscus was very active, so I got some great photos on my camera.

New blog:

"If you’ve ever visited the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland’s (RZSS) Edinburgh Zoo, you’re probably aware of our connection and history with penguins. These wonderful animals never fail to capture the hearts of our wildlife conservation charity’s team and visitors alike. If you take a waddle over to Penguins Rock, you will see over 100 penguins including king, gentoo and Northern rockhopper penguins":

Our Asian Lion | Edinburgh Zoo

There are three Asiatic lions here at Edinburgh Zoo - Jayendra, Keshari and Kushanu.

Jayendra, or Jay, our male, was born in 2010 and moved here in 2012 from Bristol Zoo.

In August 2019, Keshari, Kushanu and their sister Mitaali (now at Aalborg Zoo with mum, Roberta) were born at the zoo. The cubs were named in tribute to the Gir forest in western India where the species is found.

News about the monkey house:

Both of the diana monkeys died between a month and 2 weeks ago :(

Also the drills have left the collection with the capuchins also being planned to leave in the future, according to a keeper. I heard that the monkey house is a listed building so it will not be demolished but hopefully revamped.

Do you have any idea where the drills have gone to?

And with the death of Edinburgh's last Dianas, possibly only three holders of Dianas in UK now- Twycross, Paignton and London...with YWP having the closely related Roloway's guenon.
I had no idea Diana's were that short on numbers too! ZTL also seems to list Port Lympne as a holder as well as Owl & Monkey Haven in Newport, which apparently received a pair from Artis this year.

Yes, like gold dust these days sadly. Not sure if Port Lympne actually have any left now, but on the way out there too I'm pretty certain. London's are an elderly pair too. Only Twycross and Paignton still have any viable breeders I think.

New blog:

"As part of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) 2030 strategy, our wildlife conservation charity has pledged to reverse the decline of at least 50 species by working in Scotland and around the world.

It is important to protect animals of all shapes and sizes, but species protection alone means nothing without protecting their habitats too.

Species depend on habitats, and together they form our planet’s essential ecosystems – both habitats and species must function in harmony to create a sustainable, abundant and diverse life on earth.

Recovery efforts need to be truly collaborative between organisations, governments, and communities. Only together can we create a world where nature is protected, valued and loved.

During the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15), we will be speaking with our conservation partners around the world, to discover more about the species they are working to protect."

As far as I know, Edinburgh Zoo has very few listed buildings - only two or three including the mansion house and a toilet block. I’m sure the monkey house isn’t listed.
