Sadly I've been unable to locate anything about the golden donkey. There is no online history nor any pictures or photos of the breed.

Possibly if my French was better or I had access to some paper literature I might be able to find out more.

The non golden kind appear to have a traditional role in hauling carts up the steep streets and Guernsey folk are labelled donkeys for their stubborn nature!

It seems like a completely forgotten animal. I guess it was some sort of fawn colour-morph of the ordinary grey or black donkey though.

Temporary zoo closure

On Tuesday 11 October, last entry to the zoo will be 2pm, with animal buildings, cafés and @durrellcharityshop
closing at 3pm. On Wednesday 12 October, the zoo and charity shop will open at midday.

Please note that the gift shop will be closed all day on 11 and 12 October for stocktake.

This temporary closure will allow us to turn off our power and perform essential electrical work to develop the new gorilla and warty pig houses.

Our apologies for any inconvenience and thank you for your understanding.
Jersey/Durell have announced that next week the zoo will be temporarily closed for electrical work enabling them to develop new gorilla and warty pig houses. Does this mean that the gorilla house (that I have seen criticised previously) will be redeveloped/replaced?

A new one, or an extension, is being built now/soon. The current one is quite small and rather outdated. They've been talking about this for many years but only now is it happening.

When I was there a few weeks ago you can see it being built. It's a new multimillion pound gorilla facility paid for my the gorilla sculpture trail. Think the pigs are getting a new pad also. Loads of new stuff being built and old stuff replaced. The new guy in charge is really upgrading everything.

The new Gorilla indoor enclosure is in construction now, and will be 6 times larger than the current facility. This info was posted within the planning application in 2021.

I’ll look forward to seeing that

Fantastic news, it is great to see that Jersey are sticking with this species as they are now only one of TWO holders in all of Europe since Bristol's unfortunate closure.

Related, does anyone know if Bristol's Livingstone's went to Jersey?

All bar 4 males went to Jersey. They didn't say where the other 4 were going, but said was a new collection in the UK that doesn't hold them.

Just the make a note that the 4 Livingstone Fruit Bats are now at their new collection, awaiting the arrival of 10 more from Jersey.
These are to be part of a Bat Walkthrough exhibit which will hopefully open in the next month. Not my place to name the collection, but it's a nicely growing zoo in the north of England and they are bound to announce in due course.

Going to place my bets on YWP...

It's not announced yet but my friend was there today and they now have gelada baboons. They were in a holding cage next to the macaques so must be new.
Great news. They had a pair in the very early days, and bred at least one young one

Probably sixty years now since Jersey had those original Geladas. I have a feeling they may have been the same pair that later went to the old Monkey House in London Zoo, but not certain about that. In any event there were none in the UK for about thirty years from the end of the 60's through to when Edinburgh got them.
