ZSL Whipsnade Zoo ZSL Whipsnade Zoo News 2022

Interesting but are the Bears at JOOH, EEP bears or are they purchases from a private collection?
Some of the smaller zoos who have purchased from Privates have had knock backs trying to get their animals into the EEP.

Where did the two Indian sloth bears come from?
According to comments in the Johnson's thread, they are part of the breeding program and came from mainland Europe. I suppose one could move out to a zoo that has a suitable female, while the other stayed and waited for a mate to move in. I'd love to see young sloth bears so close to home.

On their website they said in a Facebook post when the bears arrived that they came from a European collection and both of them were waiting their turn to be paired with females as part of a European breeding programme.

A good day out at Whipsnade today with great weather, bright, clear and not too cold. Pretty busy but not school holiday volumes. Leaves are starting to turn all around the park which makes for some great colours.

Took a snap of the signage about Columbo the sloth bear below. Was actually so sad to see all the toys, feeding balls and firehouse play strips gone from the enclosure. Zoo trip didn’t feel quite the same without the ‘get to the sloth bear enclosure for feeding time’ moment.

On a happier note there was a sign on the bear enclosure saying Cinderella the brown bear has gone to the hibernation den so she won’t be visible from now on but is being joined by new bears in the spring. Excellent to see new bears will be joining the collection.

The new elephant calf was out with the herd and all provided some excellent views, there was playing around with her and Elizabeth, running around when the train came and some branch feeding for all which she tried very hard to join in with. Lovely to see. The size of the enclosure and the long fence means plenty of room for everyone to get a good view so unlike in other places a baby doesn’t mean a practical punch up in the crowd.

Lynx were active and starting to get their winter coats and the young boar are at the play fighting stage which is fun to watch. The youngest flamingo has grown loads and was out in the lake with the other birds and the slightly older juvenile.

Edit - forgot to add that after the bird show today there was bird training for birds due to join the show soon - two hornbills and a hooded vulture were in training and it was very interesting to see how the keepers build up the distances etc in the session. Nice to see that on top of the regular fliers.

Sounds like a good day all round. Do you know which species of hornbill?

No sorry there were two different birds but the keepers only mentioned they were hornbills (the mics were off for the training and they didn’t do intros etc). I got some photos as they were flying around so will see if I can pick them out.

Looking at the pictures on Google based on the 2022 stock list I think one of them may have been the visayan tarictic.

It’s truly tragic that Columbo has passed away, as he was one of my personal favourite animals to visit. I suppose this leaves Johnson’s of Old Hurst as the only holder of Sloth Bears in the UK.
I am unsure what, if anything, they’ll use his enclosure for. I doubt they’ll use it for bears again, but I wouldn’t be too surprised if they got Sun Bears, which seem to be the most popular of the Asian bear species when it comes to zoos.

I was under the impression (possibly wrong!) that the area is going to be used for the Sulawesi macaques from London (potentially mixed with the new anoa).

Brownie mentioned earlier that the macaques were going in to the space next door to the sloth bear enclosure;

Sad news about Columbo.

I doubt the enclosure will be restocked anytime soon.

The old Przewalski's Horse enclosure next to the Sloth Bear enclosure is the proposed location for the Sulawesi Macaques from London, mixed with Anoa. A new visitor path is planned round the enclosure, behind the Sloth Bear enclosure and sewerage work and rejoining the road by the tigers/emu.

One would think they would wait until the works had been completed and perhaps incorporate any changes to the enclosure under this project.

I will miss Columbo dearly. Very distinct from other bear species, and perhaps one of my favourite carnivores.

Converting the Przewalski's Horse enclosure makes sense, although I do hope that Columbo's old enclosure is used for something; it's a pretty big enclosure (over an acre in size) and it would be sad to see it go to waste...

Visited Whipsnade and had a terrific time. The baby elephant was very sweet, as expected. The vast majority of animals, particularly the large herbivores, were very active.
One thing that is worth noting is the fact that I did not see any snakes or turtles in the Aquarium/Butterfly section. While I could’ve missed them, it seems most likely to me that the snakes and turtles are being moved to what will be the new reptile house.

Had a good visit yesterday (10/10/22)
Lots showing very well, no work on the old horse paddock still.
Male boar now housed at the Bongo house.
Heard keepers talking about pallas cats coming to sight, but was unable to ask questions myself
I understand the male boar is a temp move as the female has come into season and they want to avoid a winter litter.

I know I'm a bit late to the discussion, but I'm also very saddened by the death of Columbo, as he was my favourite individual animal at Whipsnade, and having first become a ZSL member in 2008, roughly when the sloth bears arrive, I can't imagine a Whipsnade without him.

On a more positive note, if some of the rumours are true in regard to anoa, macaques, and pallas' cats, then we have a lot to look forward to in that area of the zoo!

Having read the latest ZSL Annual Report, although light on any significant zoo news, it appears the Whipsnade estate now has surplus land available for sale. What that indicates, or may imply is open to interpretation but, considering one could argue ZSL haven’t fully utilised Whipsnade to it’s full capacity since they bought the land, I’m not overly surprised.

That’s a shame when there’s more that they could do - if it’s land for houses though it would be worth a packet. Pity if that’s the case.
